Just want to pass on that I just completed the American Flyers online CFI renewal. There were no helicopter specific questions, but the IFR questions were a good review. It's a good, affordable ($150.00 US) option for renewal.

Has anyone completed a FAA CFI renewal recently through the AOPA online course. If so approximately how long did it take? The website details that "each learning unit takes an average person 50mins to complete" but it dosent state how many learning units there are.
Any input from those having used this method is welcome.

I used American Flyers in Jan this year, no problems whatsoever, and its a lifetime fee, so no need to pay again in two years.

CFI Renewall AOPA/Jeppesen
 

I am just now doing the AOPA/Jeppesen course. I have used Jeppesen several times already and I like it. It's interactive, has a nice design and it helps me to be up to date, not only as a CFI.
I have tried Gleim last time (because Jeppesen would only server the western hemisphere, go figure, in the UK it would depend if you are east or west of Greenwich) and I would not say it is a bad course, but I thought it is pretty boring. You have to read a lot and the layout without any graphics (that I remember) and very simple text layout, makes it hard to stay focussed.
Before using Jepessen again, I contacted American Flyers, but they never replied.
Some Jep courses take me quite a while to complete, at least more than 50 minutes. The activities become more and more difficult, but the test is easy in comparision. There are a few bugs in the website and I had a problem using it on the Mac, after the famous Java update lately, but I figured it out.

Here's another vote for the American Flyers.
Their content is good, website works well and there's a clear FAQ.
It costs $50 per renewal, when you've purchased FIRC for life.
This is to have them submit the paperworks to the FSDO.
(when you're not in US...)
