Hey VF, wanna shed some light on how you leave those machines running?
I guess you don't shut down cause you cannot afford risk of not starting at those altitudes... (especially seeing those rather high temperatures) Is it full, idle, servo on, off, force trim, ties, locks, duct tape,...? If it's too much hustle just forget about it and keep posting the best pics on this side of forum... Thanx |

Man. that provided the machine is proven set down on stable ground, ground idle, frictions ON & hydraulics OFF, we can exit the machine to expedite turn around + increase general & Tail Rotor safety Yep pre take-off & landing checks above 9,000' - geni off, nose cocked off to give more lever to pull up max limits on most missions here 1mm from the triangle for 5seconds on most escapes Happy Landings" |
I apologize for not paying attention in class.

VF - as always thank you for all your contributions to this thread.
It does however make be feel a little uneasy to see you flying a single engine Jetbox over a very deep lake with sheer sides and with no chance of an auto to dry land :}:}:} I appreciate alternative routing may be impossible but it must be uncomfortable without floats/dinghy/LSJ especially when the water is likely to be close to freezing. How do you assess the risks? MB |
Ooh Oow here comes trouble..............
Hey Madbob
over water flights such as this awesome lake is less than 0.01% of total flying time  so I fly higher for greater auto range & chant a Mantra :) Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om |

Question
What is the highest altitude a JetBox with nose mounted stabilized camera + Camera Operator + Pilot ever filmed up to?
|
VF - If I was asked of all the people who I thought who would know the answer to your last question my reply would be.....
You! Hope someone with REAL knowledge answers soon. Safe landings! MB |
I can ask Doug Makkonen for you. He definitely filmed in a Jetbox setup the way you asked.
Differences would be C20R (small difference:O) and maybe a whole lot of fuel as the St Elias can get very remote. Altitudes would be no higher than 20000 so they could get Mt Logan and and temps would be a lot lower than Nepal except for winter time perhaps. From memory the camera setup weighed 400 lbs . Most of that was counter weight for the camera and a back seat full of gear. My guess is 20000' but I will get back to you. And 20000' for a limit ain't gonna get much where you work |
Namaste Vertical Freedom.
Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to post your superb pictures I particulary liked the ones with your helicopter flying over the lakes and would like to use one of the pics for my screensaver if ok with you? :) Ohh and what is the meaning of your chant Om Shanti Shanti Shanti om? Many thanks |
MadBob,
I think VF question re filming altitude in a JBox was a loaded one!.....Im sure he knows as he probably achieved it:ok: |
hes probably just waiting for everyone else's answers, so that he can confirm that he did it.
|
Seems like the heli industry is doing good in Nepal with room for expansion. :ok:Heard that Manang Air is about to start operations with AS350 B3. Manang used to operate exclusively Mil aircraft and lost their last helicopter in a crash around 2009.
VF Dai, BK 117 still in operation by simrik? Found some cool footage of you taking some people on what looks like a mountain flight. Looking cool with the Bose:cool::ok: |
