I'd welcome some advice on best technique to starting a 47.
If I follow the manual and try to start on both magnetos the starter often stalls after a few compressions.
I find it easier to crank with magnetos off and flick to both after a few compressions.
However I am concerned whether the shower of sparks is wired to handle this scenario - can this cause kick backs and thus cause damage to the inertial gear?

I fly 8 different 47s and they ALL start differently!

Either technique is fine. Some start better with boost pump off, some with it on. But they all are buggers if you over prime so watch that one.

If you're priming with the throttle I find it's often better to prime it with the collective fully raised. Make sure you also have throttle in the right position for start (about 1/4 open - you should be able to feel the 'flat spot'.

Have fun flying a fab machine!

I have had various models of 47 over the years, Currently have a G 5 which starts a dream. 5 or 6 primes, wait for a minute and I usually start with mags on. This works for me.

Only trouble over the years is if Battery is getting a bit tired, and a new battery sorted that !

Most of the machines I have had, had fairly sloppy throttle controls, so when you think you have throttle at quarter of a turn for starting, it may not be far enough.

Hello,
I come from Belgium and I would like to get informations from a Bell 47 G3B1
I got twoo Bell 47 , a G (without hydraulic and a G3 that I want to convert non turbo)
I read your advice and I have some questions
1/ what's the difference between low dome piston and high dome piston?
2/ Do you have paperwork to convert G3 TO NON TURBO (stc) ?
My engine is a TVO 435 B1A
3/ May I fly with this engine without the turbo ?, I already make a test (15 min) on the ground without turbo and the engine run very well

I believe there was a UK modification to remove the turbocharger, where you would find it I do not know.
The CAA would have a copy but the copyright would lie with whoever developed it. So not sure they would be forthcoming.

This aircraft is modified to non turbo.
G-CHOP
Maybe the owner could help.
