iPad 2
 

I have just tried the iPad 2 over a 4 hour flight and it preformed well. Using Oz runways by R Wilson and Air Nav Pro with WAC charts loaded. It was fast enough to render the WAC in zoom while conducting low level turns and no lag was detected. The render did jerk to some degree while zoomed out to about 1:1 WAC scale though nothing that would put me off. It was very good in most cases of zoom and render times were good. Air Nav Pro dose not have any RAIM warnings and the data base overlay is not verified to any standard to be reliable for sole navigation. If you use it for reference only to the WAC the position rendered was spot on the the Helicopters position.

As far as Oz runways. Awesome DAP rendering and very nice to use for an EFB for approach plates. The top menu buttons are a bit small for fat fingered heli pilots when in flight. Other than that bring on the Oz runways full EFB with moving maps and Enrout charts. Is is the future and the iPad is by far the best option, bang for buck out there.

I know the title says I-pad but has anyone used any other tablet for navigation in a helicopter?
As for the I-pad 3 was told by an apple guy that it will most likely be called the I-pad pro so as not to upset the people who have just bought the 2.

I was told Air Nav (VFR?) would not run on iPad (by the Air Nav people). Am I confusing Apps/Programs.

Air nav pro works gr8 on the iPad 2. (VFR). Hmmm I would not be using it other than for a ref on the moving map. Def not an IFR app. It is fun and has plenty of features and would be ok for the part time aviator to help with map reading or overlays of danger areas and CTR boundarys but the data base is not (-at this stage) at any level of accuracy. It's more like a good tool to use for situational awareness or in x-plane for an up coming IRT. This allows you to fly and use the iPad to display the moving map. I found the WAC charts to be awesome and the zoom very clear. The charts did take some time to download and were expensive. Oz runways will be the iPad revolution when v2.0 comes out with WAC VNC En low etc. Awesome and cheap and updated with some good fail safe features applied so u can't use old charts. If you have an iPhone It can be used as a back up. I would still carry all the charts and plates IFR until CASA deam it satisfactory. I mean really u can loose a chart just as easily as having a flat battery or other electronic failure.

We were talking about compleatly different things.

"Air Nav VFR" is a computer based program. Flight planning/maps (up to date, Air Services Australia maps).
Looks fantastic (and is according to many that use it) - I got all excited thinking it now might be available for iPad.

Oz runways are apparently adding maps in June.

Does anyone know if the ipad 2 with ForeFlight will show the weather radar at 1000'-2000'. I guess I'm asking if it looses signal strength with altitude.

Ok Guys,

I am trying to understand whether I can use the IPad 2 in place of a Garmin 430? or any other GPS (North America/Alaska). What program will give me a moving map with terrain overlay (National Geo). Do I need an external antenna.

Not sure about iPad II, but on iPad I, you need the 3G version for GPS. (built in antennae)

Foreflight HD or WingX Pro give you moving map (I have both), plus Wx, airport directory, flight planning, etc. etc.

There are a few iPad Kneeboard mounts available, though I'd be careful about relying on it as sole source of navigation for a few reasons, one being impact of light and sunglasses on visibility.

I've used it on two flights as a secondary source and it was useful, though both were two pilot situations so I did not have to worry about fiddling with the iPad and the controls at the same time.

It seems that the 3g or 4g version has the built in antenna.

I noticed that Wing had a moving map overlay for the approach plate, does Foreflight also offer this application?

If you only had the option of keeping one application which would it be?

Tough call as I like both.

For Flight planning I prefer Foreflight, and it works well on iPhone too.

WingX is good inflight and I like the different views you can create (multiple sections on the screen with different info, and quick switching between customized views).

EN48 has used these "in anger" more than I and mentioned he preferred WingX.

If it won't break the bank I'd say try both as your personal preferences might be different.

ForeFlight used to offer a 30day free trial; can't recall if WingX does as well.

You can use the wifi only iPad for moving map but you will need to by the Bluetooth GPS to go with it.

This is not a bad option even for people with the 3G version as you can leave the antenna where it can get a good signal for example outside the cabin on a boat and still use the iPad inside.

I have been looking for an app that turns the iPhone into a Bluetooth gps antenna and there doesn't really seem to be one. Hopefully it's only a matter of time but it might be a limitation of the Bluetooth/iPhone.

I decided to venture into the world of Mac for the first time and got the IPad 2 with 3g, WingX and the approach plate moving map overlay. I may try the Jepp plates but will wait a bit until I can find my way around the Ipad better.
From my initial fumbling I can see why people like the Ipad.

Just bought the iPad2.
Using Air Nav Pro and Fore Flight, great for weather and pre flight info. The GPS on both work fine in the air.
AviMap Gps is a good way of getting free sectional chart coverage in the US.
Wundermap & Radar US are also good for weather radars.

Tried EFB (Electronic flight bag) seemed to be working well and better than Fore Flight, XWing and Air Nav Pro. It locked up my iPad, and blocked all Email's. Everything turned to normal after I deleted it. Could be a coincidence.

On the wingx pro 7 on Ipad2 I seem to have lost my night mode. Unlike early models it dosent seem to be on the brightness mode button.

Also ADS-B is activated but can seem to get a green on any of the modes ie Heart Beat,GPS loc,GPS Alt,FIS_B Data

Any suggestons?

Just purchased AirNav Pro for some flight planning for a proposed flight next week in England.

My observances
A) Expensive
B) Maps are incredibly expensive
C) not very intuitive, either in flight planning, browsing or inflight modes.

Maybe I'm missing something, thoughgh so far I feel a little disgruntled.

Any in sites/positive experiences with this product?

Try (Airports). You get all info you said offline + weather, notam, snowtam and more while online.
