Helicopter crashes near Hokio beach - national | Stuff.co.nz

The helicopter, an ex-military Iroquois, came down near the dunes at Hokio Beach, 10km northwest of Levin shortly after 9am today.
The man dragged the pilot from his seat and put him into the back of his ute until emergency services arrived.
"He was covered in blood on his face and neck and was very shaken," said the rescuer.
The pilot, who was the only person in the helicopter, had serious injuries to his face and was treated by St John Ambulance staff. He was then flown to Palmerston North Hospital.
Five fire crews and a support unit from Palmerston North went to the crash, said Murray Dunbar, shift manager at the central fire communications centre.
Wreckage from the crash was spread out over a large area.
Aviation gas from the helicopter was leaking and emergency crews were trying to stop it.
The helicopter was flying from Blenheim to Rotorua.

How many of these of old Restricted catergory peices of sh*t have to crash before NZ CAA grow a set of balls and ground them. How many is it now? 6-7?

The accident airframe is ZK-HSP of Lakeland Helicopters

Probably the same number as 500's that get smashed up on Deer recovery, 22's or 44's that get wrecked on Ag work, or 350's that want to take off by themselves.

One huey crash in the last 5 or 6 years, two 350's took off without a pilot last year alone...

Looks like he was at the helm. As reported - "serious but stable".

Turns out it is ZK-HSP which must have been painted the same as HSX!

Ahhh HSP pre Murupara days.
That's probably Marty in the drivers seat after we ripped out all the military equipment to lighten the old girl up.
Beautiful airframe, fresh off an overhaul in the US to go back into military service, but was mistakenly sold to Marty, who brought it out to NZ to set up a business in Tauranga.
Machine then sold to Murupara.
Was sad to see it go from Tauranga as it was the tidiest UH-1's I'd ever seen, and that included the RNZAF machines!
As an aside..... Marty told me that HSP was one of the Hueys that was modified with retractable skids for some sort of radar work before being modded back to standard config. There is a photo of it with the skids folded up somewhere.

If I remember rightly. It was an experimental airframe. Flew a radar set up along the West-East German border. Because it was experimental they didn't overhaul lifed or US parts they replaced them with new ones. But, it was a fair while ago that I was told that.
