BBC News - Jersey helicopter-loving swan has wings clipped

A swan in Jersey has had its wings clipped for a second time after falling in love with a helicopter.

Whooper, who lives at a country club close to the island's airport, lost his partner two years ago.

Last year he took a shine to a blue helicopter and flew towards its whirring blades each time it came into land at Jersey airport.

Les Mielles staff are desperately searching for a female swan to curb his dangerous obsession.

In 2012 Whooper took a liking to an incoming EC155 Eurocopter and became completely besotted with the machine.

Fatal attraction
He would chase it down the runway without fear of rejection or close encounters with the chopper's rotor blades.

Whooper's owners are trying to find a new mate for him in the home of keeping him grounded
Fearing a bird strike, the airport fire service ordered Whooper's owners to clip his wings.

But when his feathers grew back, the potentially fatal attraction grew stronger, and Whooper had to be clipped again.

Staff at Les Mielles Country Club are now searching for a female swan to keep their amorous bachelor company.

Danielle Le Brun, from the club, said: "He has taken a liking to the helicopter. He would chase it and try to get as close to it as possible which is not safe for him or the helicopter.

"I would love to find him a partner as it would help him out and stop him flying around the area.

"I have never seen anything like this with other swans, it is just him."

She said Whooper was very happy, despite his pining for a helicopter, but as swans tend to mate for life finding him a partner would help keep him safe.

Royal MD500

Not sure if this is the right thread to use but hopefully.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have apparently been flown to Denham from North Wales in an MD500 by a friend of theirs.

A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon with the closest approach to Earth on its elliptical orbit resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk. The technical name is the "Perigee-Syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system".

The most recent occurrence was on 23rd June 2013 and the next is anticipated on 10th August 2014. Supermoons occur approximately once every 14 full moon cycles.

A wee reminder: The Sea King is soon to be a thing of the past so .. appreciate her while you can!

My especial thanks to Rick Ingam, who not only takes some fabulous photographs but who consistently and unhesitatingly gives his permission for his work to be posted on PPRuNe. Rick, our thanks! :ok:

B73: Have contacted 'Riccardo' (Rick Ingham) and he has given his permission (on condition that no commercial transactions are involved and which I have assured him is the case). As mentioned above .. Rick is a star!

It is therefore up to Brilliant Stuff whether he wishes to use the shot.

The B47 shot above the Seaking is also a very worthy candidate. :ok:

I was trying to determine whether this was a Wessex or an S58 but, as you can see, the photo is ruined because somebody is standing directly in front of it.

I really find this so annoying!

Rescue workers rappel from a fire department SA365 Dauphin during a joint disaster prevention drill in Chiba on September 1, 2013

This year's drill saw the government simulate its response to a powerful earthquake in central to western Japan, a major natural disaster that researchers say may occur within 30 years or so.

In central Shizuoka Prefecture, people participated in a drill based on a scenario that Mount Fuji, an active volcano, erupts following a massive quake, Jiji Press said.

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude quake struck seismically-active Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that left over 18,000 dead or missing and sending reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant into meltdown.
