Ian Jones RIP
 

It is with enormous sadness that I learn of the death of Ian Jones (RN, Danair, BA, OAT and latterly, Helicopter Services, and probably others).

An excellent instructor who was never short of an anecdote (most of them involving him!), he was responsible for bringing on and developing many pilots both in the fixed and rotary wing world.

I only got to know him over the past four years but he was clearly a man who enjoyed life without taking it too seriously.

Heartfelt condolences are offered to Liz on his passing.

Life has suddenly become a whole lot duller.

Sad news indeed, RIP Jonesy.

Really sad news. He was my instructor a million years ago, a great character always had a story to tell.

This is very sad news indeed.. Capt. Jones was an excellent sim instructor with a unique style, and his jokes and anecdotes helped to put many a nervous student at ease while in the dreaded "sweat box" simulator.. I am very grateful to him for encouraging me through my IR course at HS.

My instructor at WAP 1988. February - normal day with 2-up. "Land".

He gets out with headset on. "I'm going to blow my nose and put the handkerchief on the grass. Land on it. This is your first solo. Good luck. I'll be away from the handkerchief - behind that hedge over there."

Disconnects headset and walks off.

God it was silent. And then very light.

Gutted :(

Jonesy made my IR bearable, with anecdotes and banter that still bring a wry grin to my face. I remain eternally grateful for the expertise he imparted, and will miss catching up with him.

Even if he did enjoy partaking in a wee drop on a 'regular' basis.;) A great character nevertheless. How the hell he saw an IR 'pass' possible in me, i'll never know. He saw something in me that others (including myself) didn't, and pushed me to continue with the IR when I would have given up. I'm only where I am now because of him. Thanks Jonesy.

Jonesy classic one liners:

When the student is flying out of trim - "Whats that bloody lump on the end of your right leg for"

When a student thinks he knows better - "Trust me son, I used to be a veterinarian"

There were loads of them one liners, and I hope others will share some more of their experiences and fond memories...

He was a gentleman, and I will raise a glass or two in memory of him tonight...

I will keep all informed as to the date of the funeral and the wake at Booker so that friends can remember a true character who will be sorely missed.

My name is Simon Jones and Ian was my father.

I was so touched by the comments and stories from fellow pilots and people who had the good fortune to know him that I wanted to acknowledge your thoughts and sorrow at his passing.

I am obviously devasted by his death and cannot express the loss that we all feel. But at the same time I know that he lived life to the full and was able to touch the lives of so many people in such positive ways. My own grief is somewhat lessened by the loving and fond memories I have of him. Too many hilarious stories that only 'Jonesy' could tell, the unbelieveable exploits that he got up to and the laughter that always followed him and that he created in others.

My father would want you all to share your stories of him with others and he would love to be around to hear the laughter and share a drink. I hope that at his ceremony there will be lots of stories told, laughter heard and the occasional tear shed for a man that truly was remarkable.

Thank you for all your kind thoughts at this time.

Like many others I owe in part my current lifestyle to Jonesy persevering with me on the IR course. I remeber well the comments about using one's feet and even now as I wander across the North Sea I say to myself 'Fly Accurately'! That one was drummed in to my head.

Thanks Jonesy you'll be missed. Deepest sympathy to his family and RIP.

How very sad. Jonesy was a true gentleman and ace innstructor. I too completed my IR(H) thanks to his good humour and instructing skills. He had it all. RIP old friend...and thank you.... and fly accurately! :ok: bm

I assume this is Ian Jones - one time "beefer" at RNEFTS Bulldogs - RAF Leeming late 70's?

If so I recall a man who managed to impart his knowledge and experience with ceaseless wit and humour. One of a kind - Never a dull moment !

Very popular with us studes in the air, in the crewroom and. . . . in the bar !
