Galway with a helo

Going into Galway Races next week with a helicopter. Does anyone know who you should contact. Tried the webpage for the races info but only gives numbers of charter companies. Appreciated if anyone can shed any light.

Thanks in advance. TD

Tell them that you want to come in by helicopter. They should then direct you to the relevant person who can help you.

Good luck. You should have booked months ago.

whatsarunway 23rd Jul 2007 20:59

i think the closing date was the start of may to book in!

206Fan 23rd Jul 2007 22:29

Ha goodluck trying to get a landing spot indeed!

HillerBee 23rd Jul 2007 22:40

No, chance anymore.

The company that runs the helipad/operations is Avicon. Around the racecourse is restricted airspace during raceweek.

They expect 200 helicopters so it's kind of busy!

nouseforaname 24th Jul 2007 18:51

I asked them and they shut applications on 1st of May!...found that amazing actually. I booked to land at the Cheltenham Festival in March 3 weeks before the meeting no problem, also, the same with Aintree.

HillerBee; when you say they expect 200 helicopters at Galway 'so it's kind of busy'....there was 380 helicopters landed at the Cheltenham Festival (found that out from helicopter and aviation during the festival)- :ouch:

FYI, nouse, that's 380 helicopter movements, not 380 helicopters.

IIRC, there weren't 200 actual helicopters at Cheltenham (nor Silverstone, for that matter).

Bravo 73 -check your pm's

Bravo73 25th Jul 2007 15:59

Thanks, nouse. It was such a nice PM, I figured that I should share it with everyone:

get your facts right

No Bravo73....I know i'm being a pain in the arse now but I find so many people on this forum such 'know it all' nob heads it just isn't funny.

there were over 700 LANDINGS at cheltenham that's 1400 movements (i'm not going to say who told me that for obvious reasons but it's from the horses mouth put it that way).

:ugh:

If you don't like the "'know it all' nob heads", I suggest that you post elsewhere.

Galway Races - somewhere to land

I missed the deadline for landing at the actual racecourse.....does anyone know anywhere you can land there like a hotel or something that is closer to the racecourse than the airport.?

From memory the traffic always seems to be heavier coming from the East side of the town, so maybe somewhere to the West side?

Thanks in advance.TD

ShyTorque 27th Jul 2009 10:21

You missed the deadline by 2 years?

No: SP merged a request with a previous thread, to save posting a link ;)

funfinn2000 27th Jul 2009 11:22

TD , even if ya could get registered you would need to park helicopter somwhere as there is no parking at racecourse, Call executive helicopters in Galway, you can park yer heli at theirs and take a ride in with their machine, resonable rates

Hopadopter 27th Jul 2009 17:40

FF2000 have I missed something, if your not allowed park at the racecourse why would anyone be registering? Parking available at airport from what I hear, if your willing to battle the road traffic on the way in. Anyone got any feedback on No.s of Heli's from day 1.

CVR 27th Jul 2009 20:30

Dont know what the fuss is all about, only seven landings at the track today and I did two of them.........they even let two helicopters park up for the whole day.

Hopadopter 27th Jul 2009 20:44

As I suspected CVR. However I rang organizers today and they were unwilling to let anymore register at this late stage. Strange I thought, I'm assuming entries must be way down this year.

CVR 28th Jul 2009 10:43

Last year you could have thrown a stone and hit any number of helicopters, you would have found it hard to find one yesterday. I believe 30 helicopters have booked in, ( I didn't think we had 30 left in the country) but then again there was no fee this year. Saying that Wednesday and Thursday should be good " I hope".... if not then the last one to leave please turn off the lights....its going to be a bad year.

As for road traffic there was none, our ground crews drove from the airport, passed the race course and into the city in 10 minutes yesterday. It was really sad to see, the Galway races were always a high light in the flying calendar in Ireland.

Sorry the hear you couldn't register, I'm a bit surprised really..

funfinn2000 28th Jul 2009 18:42

wednesday is the day when most travel down, lets hope its a success. There has only ever been parking there for Jp's machine, there is no room for parking at the course, I guess this year it's a quiet year. Is there any feeder sites set up from Exec or Skywest? Moran's on the weir could be interesting on Friday.
