Rotorheads calendar December 2008

This month’s calendar was taken in April 2008 by photographer Alan O’Neal, and is a formation shot of Bristow’s new Sikorsky S76C++ and EC155B1. The picture was taken offshore from their base at Norwich Airport, England.

Thanks for your work John, I appreciate the buzz that a good wallpaper does to make the day.

Old School:

All helicopters look ugly next to a S76!

The 76 is the finest looking helicopter every built IMHO.

Nice photo, nice aircraft, but curious formation technique - who's looking at what?

Great photograph, but what strikes me is the apparent difference in attitudes of the 2 aircraft. Reminds me of a picture I have of one of our Wessex in formation with a Spitfire.

As the 76 is the one that looks"normal", any 365 or EC155 drivers out there care to comment.

Flying Bull 2nd Dec 2008 09:44

Hi inputshaft,

the gerabox/rotor is mouted so that it is tilted forward to achive cruisespeeds from around 150 kts - looks quite normal for me ;-)

Yeah, but the 76 is doing the same speed!! I know the 76 has a rearwards CG when empty, that's why it looks normal to me. With a similar cabin configuration the 155 must be more nose down than a Bo105 when loaded.

Anyway no big deal, just thought that my dear old 61 was the only helo to look like that with only 2 fat guys and their sandwiches on board:ok:

Flying Bull 2nd Dec 2008 10:40

Hi inputshaft,

we only have a picture - no video - so we don´t know whether the EC is just zooming past the 76 or they are flying the same speed ;-)
I feel very comfortable in the EC 155 - but didn´t had the chance to fly the 76 so far.
Greetings Flying Bull

magbreak 2nd Dec 2008 11:44

They were flying at the same speed to allow the 76A+ to stay ahead and get the two aircraft in shot.

The formation was as requested by the photographer and was shifted to get the shots he wanted. This shot is one of about 40 Alan took of the formation. We'd earlier shot several pictures around an offshore platform as well.

155 was on a heading and speed and the 76C++/ A+ moved as requested. We were lmited on speed as the A+ had it window out for the photos.
