Self fly hire in the New York/Long Island area
 

I am looking into the possibilities of renting a helicopter, preferably R-44, in the New York City / Long Island area.
Anyone have an idea where to start.
New Jersey area close to the city would be good as well

Linden New Jersey has R44/R22 helicopters there... as I recall. Theres aplace in Princeton NJ. Lots of S300 around too.

Rotordent Helicopter Flight Training Inc. at KISP as mentioned earlier in the thread has R44'S and intructors with plenty of experience in the NY area.

Wings in Westchester have a S300. Pegasus in Linden NJ have 22's and a 44, Princeton have a few incl. 44. Most reasonable turbine in the area is a 206 at Yalesville for ~$900/hr. Atlantic/Eastern/what ever they go by have a 44 though mixed reviews.

Unfortuneately the "home of helicopters" is not particularly SFH friendly, you will have to fly with an instructor (though if it is just a short trip probably not a big deal), and your flight will typically just be a cross country/sightseeing trip then back to base.

There are pruners who can put you in touch wih folk at Princeton and Yalesville if they read this, I can introduce you to Wings if you would like an intro.

I’m also interested in R44 SFH when in New York. However, I’d only want to SFH without a safety pilot (he takes up a seat for no reason). Is there a group that would SFH with check ride, requisite hours & RHC Safety Course?

I’ve found mixed possibilities in other states. I know this is due to most US groups opting for the seemingly cheap Pathfinder insurance with $80k deductible on R44 (not so cheap when viewed in that context). For example, in southern California, I found 9 operators who would give me a R22, but none of them would rent a R44 without safety pilot.

RMK, sadly Pathfinder is derigeur here.

Pretty hard to SFH a 44 in any state without a significant hour investment.

And then even when you pass that hurdle, they don't want you doing much else than returning immediately back to the airfield.

Knowing owners is what's needed.
