Downwind? Dreaded Dauphin pitch stop limit? Or just ambition exceeding ability.....

Dreaded Dauphin pitch stop limit?
What is that? Surely all helicopters have a pitch stop?

MightyGem 22nd Jan 2019 19:50

Looked fairly normal. Undercarriage collapse?

Hope everyone was okay. At 18 seconds it seems to drop suddenly and all goes bad.

I always understood that the unique "shrieking" sound of the older Dauphines/Gazelles was due to the main rotor interacting with the fenestron but this one loses the main rotor and it's still "shrieking". Also, listen to that fenestron whine initially go really high after it loses the load of the main rotor!

I think the "shrieking" does not come from the fenestron, more likely from the engines. Check the video from the AS350 crash at Auckland Harbour some time ago, same noise.

Looks to be a Z-9, so who knows what sort of quality issues there are with those vs a "real" Dauphin

You may be right, but that comment reminds me of the way the British et al, regarded the Japanese at start of WW2 in Malaya.
Good idea not to underestimate the opposition.

Indeed it was a Z9 - Just rebuilt, apparently, after a long time on the ground.
