R22 NVFR ATSB Report

G'day All,
We all know that it goes on, but they don't always get away with it. Tragic for the families and friends, but some people won't be told. Wonder what the insurance company thinks??

The report makes interesting reading, its tragic yes, but also stupid, How can a supposedly experienced PIC with over 9000 hrs experience throw all caution to the wind and make such a flight, No night rating, not certified ! an aircraft equipped only for day VFR. ( I suppose with out even an AI ) groping around at 30' Agl what ever happened to climbing to safety altitude when unsure of your position at night. Having flown at night in very dark remote places myself without any outside references I also know how beneficial an instrument rating is in such situations.

Given the circumstances he must of had a very compelling reason to even attempt the flight, I cant believe it can all be put down to stupidity.

Hope the passenger made a full recovery.
