Legit - kids' science experiment on reaction times

Hi everyone, just thought I'd pass this on, I wouldn't normally but it's kind of fun and it's legitimate, I personally know the girl that sent me the email, and she knows the kid .... you get the idea.... so go ahead and give it a go ...

Hello,
One of the 7th graders here at the school is doing a science project that has to do with reaction time and age. He needs some data. I am forwarding this email [sic] address http://www.rider2rider.com/ so you can try it and support science. It is very simple and will take you less than a minute to complete. Please forward to anyone you think will try it. Let your kids try it too, mine thought it was fun.

Doesn't work behind our proxy server, bit like me! Even resorted to trying IE

212man 13th Feb 2006 07:49

Interestingly got 0.184 using left mouse click, but consistently over 0.2 using enter key with longer travel.

Coming up against the half century. Might have been quicker but I had to pop out for a while..

Had another go, slightly better: 0.16279999999999997

fishboy 13th Feb 2006 09:16

Every single attempt was 0.187 maybe not the quickest but does consistency count?:E

Grainger 13th Feb 2006 09:21

44 years old ... 0.225 sec :{

One foot in the grave time for me !

Now where's my . . . oh, what's it called . . .

It appears to have a fatal flaw: the speed and type of connection! Wireless laptop, average well over 1 second.
Broadband desktop using wireless mouse, about 0.3 sec average
Broadband desktop using space bar, about 0.23 sec average

Then again, Desperate Housewives was on TV when I was on the laptop :p

i4iq 13th Feb 2006 11:01

Shouldn't be anything to do with connection speed if it's a java script running on the local machine...

How old are you John?;)

Heliseka 13th Feb 2006 11:02

.250 and 33 yrs. will try after a few beers and see if the results on "WKRP in Cincinatti" will hold up.

Camp Freddie 13th Feb 2006 18:23

0.1812 age 40 2nd attempt

seems as much about practice as age, as I was a lot slower the first time

I'm now at work, and have tried this on a number of different computers, with wildly varying results: a wireless mouse or keyboard will not give better than 1 second, whilst a "cable" mouse or keyboard give a reasonably consistent 0.23 seconds. Maybe this is a factor that hasn't been allowed for in the project?

And I'm 57 physical age: no comment on mental age, please  .

i4iq 13th Feb 2006 22:21

Good point John - a wireless mouse could offer a delay to the PC and therefore point to a factor that hasn't been accounted for - or it could be that the original hypothesis is correct...

mikelimapapa 14th Feb 2006 01:00

.209, I dont know how solid his theory is cause I'm only 21
