Scrapheap Challenge - What are they sitting on?

Anyone know the type of "scrapped" helo in/on which the presenters sit during Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge.

Help settle a family dispute!

I think it could be an Allouette 3 ???

This link should provide the spotters out there to see the machine being referred to:

Let battle commence......

Teefor Gage

Thanks for the "wide" shot. It now seems to be a Scout or Wasp?
But which???!!!!

If that tyre wasn't in the way you'd be able to see if there was a folding joint down the end of the tailboom. Other than that it'd be difficult to say for certain.
(Going to say Scout, but only out of nostalgia).

IT'S A SCOUT

If you look above the tyre at the pylon it is just visible as an aerofoil section, therefore Scout. The Wasp had a pylon. Paint work also looks brown/green rather than blue.

Check out the main rotor blades which do not fit into the blade grip. Lord knows where they came from, its a mess. Also very old main rotor head with friction dampers, don't see any of them around now-a-days.

Scout / Wasp, it's neither.

If you look closer at the pic,

1. There are no rear doors.
2. The floatation pods are too low to be a Westland fit.
3. You can see that the Scrapheap a/c was fitted with 2 engines.
4. The main giveaway as to what it isn't, is that there are no leather seats.

Where was it filmed?
Perhaps it is a prototype Czech Scasp PZH3.

Me thinks it's a scout and it was filmed in an army training area between Reading and Basingstoke.

Can't say no more, hush hush

The main fuselage and tail boom are definitely from a Scout AH Mk 1. Just aft of the cabin can be seen the footstep/fuel tank access bay, further along the table boom is the aperture which is normally covered by the static vent panel. Also the Hydraulic Reservoir on the port side aft of cabin.

diginagain 7th Dec 2005 10:46

Why not move the question into 'What Cockpit' on AH&N?

'KJ's looking sweet - you don't get that depth of shine with trich!

Rocket2 7th Dec 2005 12:09

Ok so the fuselage is from a Scout, but the blades aren't (they appear to be held on with large Jubilee clips or mighty strong Ty-wraps). Can't find anything that resembles them so assume they were they cobbled together by the BBC?

SilsoeSid 7th Dec 2005 12:17

G-BYKJ formally known as XV121

Civ Reg, Army colours

XV 122 is the closest in my book. HK'87

Not sure, Siddley, but didn't '121 do time in Detters? Seems somehow familiar.
(isn't it supposed to be 'formerly', BTW?) ;)

SilsoeSid 7th Dec 2005 12:51

Crikey, google 'XV121' :O

I guess she must have done some time in Germany somewhere!!!

Nope! :)

diginagain 7th Dec 2005 13:03

Oo er, missus. Don't want to go there.

Sid I shall formally withdraw my former formerly point once formal evidence is produced. I've got plenty of time, don't rush.

No, on second thoughts, knowing the way your mind operates, I'll just agree with your interpretation. It's safer.
