From what I remember, a statute mile is 5,280 feet and a nautical mile is 6076 (or is it 6,080 ?) feet. (5,280/6,076 = .869). Multiply statute miles by .869 for nautical miles.

The following web page will give information on, and lead you to, an excellent freeware conversion program.

inthegreen, other way round; multiply statute by 1/0.869 (=1.15) to get nautical miles.

To 212Man: I've read your post a few times and re-tried the math just to make sure before I posted again, but I think I had it right. For any given distance you measure you would have more statute miles than nautical miles because statute miles are shorter. So, multiplying statute miles by 1.15 to get nautical miles would make the product higher, which is contrary to what we know about the two distances. Try it again, maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I think the download suggestion is better and easier on the tired old noggin.

212MAN
Wright numbers wrong application.

Multiply statute miles by .869 to get nautical . Multply nautical miles by 1.15 to get statute.
example : 100 nm X 1.15 = 115 sm
115 sm X .869 = 100 nm.

Further : A nautical mile is equal to 1 minute of latitude which is equal to 6080 feet while a statute mile is 5,282 feet.

Oh God! what an arse. It's amazing what a couple of beers and half a bottle of wine can do to your brain.

Per converting nautical/statute (If 1.15 statute is not accurate enough)- One US nautical is exactly 1852 meters, same as 1.150779448023543 statute per my HP... English nautical is somewhat more. If you'd like I'll dig it out
