Concept of fitting tamper resistant time recording devices to helicopters

LowNr 31st Dec 2004 04:36

:ok: What a good idea!

As long as CASA can come up with an accurate system and make everyone put it on, I'm all for it. 'Course I have my doubts about how well the industry in general will take to it, more cost is never a good thing. However, if it can stop some of the 'underlogging' that goes on, it's got to be for the best.

On the other hand, will CASA check on it and enforce it if they find problems!! We'll see.

Call to Record Chopper Flight Times

I have a collective and an engine Hobbs meter in the aircraft I fly.

Collective for maintenance time and engine for billing... When I acquired the helicopter I had these two meters installed for these reasons...

I know that every hour flown in the aircraft is honest and actual... I have never cheated on hours and never will.

Do you think "Hobbs meters" will satisfy CASA if the proposed rules become regs??? If so, I’m all for it!:ok:

Hobbs meters are electric, and have circuit breakers which are too easily pulled.

There was a famous case in Oz many years ago where a private 206 owner felt that the school using his machine on cross-hire was under-paying him. He installed a secret meter in the broom cupboard, and caught them out very badly - they had been pulling the breaker on the obvious meter, not recording the flight time on the MR and not paying the owner.

CASA gave them a kick in the slats, the CP took a jump but the company now known as The Breaker Brothers is still in business making obscene amounts of money.

Breaker Brothers

Happy New Year to ye all, not forgetting those affected by the disastrous events of the last few days. My thoughts are with you!

I know the story of the breaker bros. well, as would many of you boys that were around the Sydney basin in the early nineties.

Ascend Charlie has most of the story correct, except the CP/CFI took the fall (understandably) and departed the industry to work as a security guard. The other partner is still in the game making s##t loads of money and still walks that fine line. CASA (OR CAA at the time) tried hard to run him down and drive him from the industry, but to no avail.

The CP/CFI was a great pilot and a fantastic person, but as it seems, was coercesed into retrieving money owed him by the aircraft owner after a business deal gone real bad! Now, if you have met that person you would know he's a gentleman with a shakey hand!

Not condoning anyone cheating on the system AT ALL, but it seems the more AND grander some operators buck the system, the more CASA remain off their back (seem scared to take them on), while the smaller operator recieves bulls##t NCN's and threats for friviolous things! Good one boy's!

On the problem of tamper proof clocks, I fly other peoples aircraft at times also, so I would be comfortable in the knowledge that the hours are correct when I have a look at the MR.

Here's to a better start to the new year for all ye Rotorheads and their families!

AB.

Oh Frank, would love to see you drop the 1.12 as a New Years Present......

My soap box is now empty for anyone wishing to raise to the challange.

CASA crackdown on helicopter record maintenance

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority, CASA, is moving to crack down on helicopter pilots who may be fudging their flying hours or maintenance records.

CASA says under-recording of flying hours is believed to have contributed to at least three fatal chopper accidents in recent years.

It's proposing that Australia's 650 single-engined helicopters would be required to fit tamper-resistant electronic timers, costing $5,000."

Good Idea

There is already a thread on this - labeled "Call to record flight times - The Australian"

It's a good idea, IF CASA DO IT RIGHT. I for one don't like the thought of flying helicopters whose 'history' is false. Anyone who does deliberately falsify hours records should be in JAIL.

Mind you, I think the situation has come to this because CASA HAVEN'T been serious about about catching and getting rid of the 'bad' operators and owners in the system. It takes serious enforcement and will to do that. If CASA don't change that attitude, this new measure won't have much of a chance, either.

Happy New Year!!:ok:
