I used to go skiing on standby when I worked for AirVallee.
A great region.
Lots of gliders and some helicopters to keep in mind when operating the Dornier 328 jet in and out of the field.
Pure VFR. Easy enough for us as we generally landed straight in from the south east and took off opposite out the wally climbing in the middle to avoid gliders.

Tragic accident.
Tough to operate in the mountains, never mind looking out for traffic.

I think VFR flight should be better regulated, especially within a FIR.
It’s quite lucky some mid air collisions are still quite rare

According to a report in the Rotorheads forum, it was a Jodel D.140.E. So yes, it's a five-seater.

Very sad incident indeed.

It’s not. It’s a ski-equipped Jodel D140 Mouquetaire from Megève used for training experienced pilots for the Mountain Rating. I flew one of its sister aircraft to the Rutor glacier a couple of weeks ago.

There were 3 on board, 2 of whom are missing. The maximum number of occupants we take when traing is 4 but at the Glacier de Ruitor where we take-off at around 10,500’ 3 adults is plenty.

The aircraft involved was a a Jodel D140 F-PMGV on a mountain rating training flight out of the altiport at Megève. I’ve flown it many times and landed on the Rutor glacier (Ruitor in French) just a couple of weeks ago. There are often helicopters sharing the same airspace and there’s never been an issue - in the Alps we coordinate using position reports on the mountain frequency of 130.00 and over the border in Italy we use the chopper frequency. Italian media are reporting the the instructor survived but that the two others on board are still missing. SAR mission resumes at 8 am CET.

You obviously do not fly VFR.

Or the professional version. Make XPDR + ADS-B mandatory. Its high time for that. We do have paragliders jumping off a rock right at 10nm finals (LOC-DME / RNAV approach) and these dudes seem to look for death. Had a few near misses with em over the years and contrary what one would think they are hard to see at times... handheld XDR with ADSB for them.

Sure.
And outside FIRs, ie: above open sea, the regulation is just fine.
