Power Check calculator

Hi All,

I have created power check calculator which makes all power check procedures much easier. It is not excel but rather an online tool. If somebody would like to use something like this I can share it. Just let me know in priv or via e-mail: [email protected]

PS FLM charts were scanned and mathematical models were developed then I have programmed everything into the web app.

Hope you find it useful,
Tom

Standard Aero already has one in the Google Play store and Apple store I believe also.

Which air frames do you have on yours?

I have prepared calculations for EC135 P2+/P3 with the possibility of easy extension for new airframes if needed.

There was a simple power check carried out on Whirlwind 10s in Borneo in the sixties. The reason being that the trees there were up to 200 ft. tall.

The Whirlwind used to have a piston engine and when this was changed to the Gnome gas turbine it could produce more power than the transmission could cope with. To avoid overtorqueing the transmission there was an adjustable series of lines attached to the rim of the fuel flowmeter. This gave the pilot a red line to which he could pull to protect the transmission.

Engines wear so obviously it would develop less power than before for the same fuel flow and maximum performance always had to be displayed so as to climb out of a 200 ft. clearing. For this reason a simple test was used.

The aircraft would be loaded up to 7,800 lbs. pounds and then be climbed vertically to 200 ft. against the stop watch. If it cracked it in a minute that was fine. Should it fall short then the adjustable red line was moved around the fuel flowmeter and the exercise tried again with sacks of sand to replace the fuel that had been used. When it reached 200 ft. in a minute it was classed as satisfactory.

If it sprinted up to 250 ft. that was a bonus.

135 power check is easy. Nowhere near as much as you thought, and less if it's hot, humid or both! Eeeeeek!

Hi,

there is something which may be interesting for you. Handy tool for power check calculations which is available for AS350BA&B2 and Bell 206B3. We are open to add new helicopters and new functions depending on the need

Benefits for pilots:
- enter data and then engine performance available in less than 1 second,
- many different helicopters in one app,
- share the result to your engineer via one button,
- results history for all aircrafts.

Would you like to add there your helicopter? Please leave me the priv message or via [email protected]

During my SAR days we were taught to conduct a 45kt power check flying downwind in order to be assured that we had sufficient power to hover. Since we needed to hover in order to take off, I suppose the check was unnecessary unless operating in the mountains. After nearly 60 years, my memory of WW10 performance is rather hazy. Happy to be corrected!

What does the wind speed matter if you’re doing 45KIAS?

I tried to run it, but it doesn't work. Just a white screen when loaded.

P2+ and P3 should have inflight "Engine Power Check" page in VEMD? Just call up the page and push a button.

Maintenance Power Check on the ground is pretty straightforward as well although a bit more manual and more relevant. Biggest problem is loading the thing up so it does not hover on one engine!
