Helicopter noise in films
Is it just me?
I see something in a movie that is clearly powered by a gas turbine and has a high velocity rotor system.
It should make a noise like a powerful fixed wing light plane (as does a 500) or even a light turboprop.
Sometimes said chopper even has a fenestron - and we all know what that sounds like.
But some goddam lazy foley artist has dubbed in either:
*the sound of a UH-1, or even worse
*a Bell 47!
Maybe I'm getting anal in my old age?
But to my ears - your modern helicopter sounds a darn sight better.
Why can't they get it right!!!

Now you've spoilt my movie going experience! I guess the moon buggy in "Armageddon" wasn't really a V8?
At least Vin Diesels stunts in the F&F movies are real.

Along with the revving up as it lift off.
Another thing that gets me, is the starting of a C130, that sounds like a DC3 with low compression.

Yes!!!
To my ear, there's nothing more poetic than the high energy electric whine of a starter motor, the ticking of injectors and then that "whoosh" as the gas lights in the can...

"Electric whine..." Bah, humbug..
What were that Rusky machine with the radials hanging off either side - a Kamov ? Now i reckon that woulda been a sweet stereo system.

Sound editors annoy me with this habit of making almost all helicopters on film sound like a two-bladed Huey but they are just sound editors, not a helicopter nut like me.
More lately I've noticed they tend to edit together the sound of different machines depending on what the helicopter is doing. Eg. approaching from a distance = Huey. Fast fly by = Gazelle. Landing = Bell 407 or similar four-blader.
A lot of credit must be given to the sound editors on Blue Thunder who kept everything consistent between the three main featured helicopter types. Even when the JetRanger formates with the Gazelle during the "flight check" scene, you can hear on a good sound system that they put a lot of effort into getting it right.

Now that sounds like a helicopter.
Interesting - three noises there.
The low frequency boom at first I assume is a shockwave ahead of the main rotor?
Then some main rotor tip noise as it flies past - and finally the noise of the fenestron?

The predominant noise on the outbound leg of a high speed pass is engine noise. The noise from the fenestron, while present, is quite diminished compared to engine (turbine exhaust) noise.

Worst I've seen (heard) is Edge of Tomorrow where they start up an old Schweizer 300 and apparently this one has a turbine...

Be surprised if aviation and motorbike nut Cruise let that through...
