Franz Ehrengruber, a retired pilot who has flown in and out of Filton airfield, urged councillors to consider a range of aviation issues principally around the site's topography and potential flight paths.

“From an aviation point of view the site is totally unacceptable,” he said. “There is a hill, a number of obstacles including the RAC tower and power lines. It is a dangerous site.

“Visibility may be severely restricted due to these obstacles and at times this will mean that flights will have to be cancelled. I suspect the helicopter pilots and operators had little say in it."

As an observation on the recognition of the effects of the NPAS restrictions on policing, Peter James is the author of a detective series centred on Brighton. His latest novel makes constant and firm reference to the loss of H900 and the lost ability to have air cover over Brighton and Hove within three minutes, against NPAS 15 with a minimum of 15 minutes if available and not being used by Surrey, Kent or Hampshire. Which has its influence on the outcome of his story, of course!

Not that it will change the beancounters' parsimony

The simple fact is there is no real public appetite for Police helicopters (unlike HEMS).

Ask most people what they think and the majority will just moan about the noise/privacy concerns/constantly flying over my house etc

When it comes to public money, people would rather see it spent on more "worthy" things than "toys for boys".

Just read the comments under this article:

Turning into a 'hamster wheel' thread

Here we go again yes that's all well and good Johni, however I think you'll find the fact is the majority are actually on side.

Suffice to say that even those most loud at making the complaints only do so up to the point when it is their family member that ...... etc etc.

Does this 'majority of people' you speak of really think that HEMS aircraft use stealth technology and don't fly over houses! By the way, for every comment under that article you refer to complaining about police helicopters, there are another two in support

To think that if you got rid of Police helicopters you'd get more officers on the beat is straight out of cloud cuckoo land.

Some people need to remember the old saying, 'Be careful for what you wish for, you might just get it!'

p.s. Most of your majority couldn't tell a HEMS aircraft and Police Aircraft at the best of times.

.... and that the word on the street is that NPAS will be renamed to MPAS (missing persons air service) reflecting the other life saving work that is done, day in day out, night in night out, both rural & urban; so sorry to disturb you all while trying to save lives.

Still, best not tell those out there thinking they are simply 'boys toys' about all this life saving type work.

For the uninformed, in particular those of the 'boys toys' mentality, would you believe females are allowed to be pilots and police officers these days and sometimes the whole crew compliment can be female .... whatever next!

MG back in Feb;
I also hear that they are doing away with Base Senior Pilots. So who's going to do all the stuff that the SPs do then? How about one of the pilots? Hmm...what shall we call him/her to distinguish him/her from the other? How about...Chief Pilot? You couldn't make it up if you tried.
Oh yes you could, have you read the latest FSI?

Just to wet the strawberries of a few of the people from earlier posts who wanted helicopter deterrence quantified;

Edinburgh Evening News

Earlier this year the number of cases involving thieves stealing car keys from homes and fleeing in stolen vehicles doubled in just three months, and determined officers have vowed to launch a “relentless” fightback on city criminals.

Operation RAC – a drive to target housebreakers and car thieves – was resurrected in April, with more than 120 arrests and 408 charges secured since then.

And Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, Edinburgh’s Divisional Commander, said the aircraft had overseen a 90 per cent fall in the number of juvenile motorbike thefts reported to police over those five days.

“The helicopter has been here all week. The week before that, we had more than 100 reports of kids or young people on stolen motorbikes across the city – using them for either stealing other vehicles or breaking into houses.

In the last week since the helicopter’s been around you could count the number of incidents that have been reported to us on one hand. So, the level of suppression around incidents like that is significant, and the helicopter has a huge part to play in that."

Sid, love your video of Professor Moriarty, the criminal mastermind who hid from the police helicopter - on a ROOF. It's a real battle of wits some days, eh?

No. Don't have access now that I'm retired. Tell more.

Edinburgh’s Divisional Commander
Well, they're not part of NPAS, are they.

Former RAF base - Yorkshire

A source in the airport world mentioned that NPAS are interested in the ex RAF base Church Fenton as a possible base for the planned plank operations. Cheap landing fee's and hangarage.

New owner of RAF Church Fenton plans commercial flying - and says 100 jobs should be created (From York Press)

Learnt something today anyway,I now know why the stiff wings are going to be more expensive than first thought, apparently ,as they can fly whilst rotary are grounded due to weather, they are being fitted with a sooper dooper camera that can see through clouds !

Most of what you spluttered is not available at some operational naps sites.

Have you any news apart from the usual trolling Forty2twittoo? No I didn't think so. Jog on

"Most of what you spluttered is not available at some operational naps sites."

That, my dear Cabby, is because it is not required by a Day/Night VFR only helicopter operation. Got a public transport Fixed Wing? - then you need a lit runway and fire cover. Want IFR - Then you need a way to get visual again.
Take 5 and check the facts - especially about "Former" RAF Airfields in parts of Yorkshire.
