There were only two helicopters flying in the formation.
IAF officers said the pilots flying the two helicopters were very experienced pilots of the rank of wing commanders with well over a decade of flying experience.

Newscasters.....they just kill me!
She says there was a deviation from SOP's....and there is probably going to be consequences.
I would suggest the consequences have already occurred!

Their 'retired expert' :
'They were pretty close, and that's why this accident took place'
'In a fixed wing aircraft the wings are fixed,in this case they are rotating'

Top of the World
sincere condolences
Incredible India, amongst the poorest trained Pilot's (I have seen 5 yrs there in check n training yikes) - no auto's, no tail-rotor probs, vertical take-off at an airfield with no airspeed when not required, etc etc
Happy Landings

VF,
I am curious.Just what is your experience in India or anywhere else to make such a broad sweeping statement? If you want to use accidents to illustrate your point then, I am afraid, the rest of the world will come out looking very bad in terms of numbers, causes and stupidity. So,again, I am curious as to what scientific data you have to back up the "worst pilots" sobriquet.
I will wait for your response.

I dealt with a high ranking ex military pilot form India who claimed he had a lot of instrument time. It became very obvious after a short while he had no experience at all, but he steadfastly refused to acknowledge that he had no idea what he was doing, despite coming out of the clouds in the simulator upside down time after time.
Anyway we signed him off for VFR flight only. A short time later one of his colleagues arrived carrying a copy of the aforementioned gents paperwork. He had somehow managed to change all his grades to excellent and now he was signed off for instrument flight. It was a masterpiece of forgery! As far as I know he hasn't killed himself yet. All to save face................

vaquero, I've heard of unnamed person from unnamed source, who had helicopter commercial and somehow not being able to hover semi-decently. Beats me. Not sure of location of training (and completion), but it was holder of Indian CPL(H), Indian national. That truly is beyond belief.
VF's words from own experience aren't 'PC' in this age, obviously, but how often/far should some stuff be swept under the rug? Anyone interested in India's helicopter ops safety, check out the RWSI's stats on accidents/incidents.
