Bell 205 tail-rotor
Duri 205 A 1s
I believe that when I arrived in Duri in 1975 they had the 212 Tail rotor installed but that the control chains broke links often. A fix (of sorts) was to remove the Bell chain guards and fit a locally made guard which had rubber lining.
This provided feedback resistance to the pilot by way of increased pedal forces when a link broke ( they used to stick up) but without the tendency to jam solid as the Bell guard did.
Something had to give and one of the 205's suffered a complete chain failure coming into land at Duri cutting the T/R driveshaft after a very heavy landing.
Bell came up with a Mod that enabled the 212 pushrod system to be fitted; a Tech from Ft. Worth came to Duri and modified the spare tailbone with Harry Beresford who was then authorised to modify all our tailbooms. Bell subsequently put out a SB or TB to cover the fleet.
