Swedish police couldn't pursue the thieves because a bag marked "bomb" had been placed outside the police heliport, and officers had to deal with the bag before they could enter the heliport.

If I'm not mistaken that 206 is based at Nortelje north of Stockholm
with a company called Proflight
One of the aircraft in which I trained whilst there
most of the area is surrounded by forestry

When the robbers came to Roslagen Helicopters AB in Norrtälje, only to walk straight into the hangar. There was no alarm and no employees of the helicopter hangar.

They have cut through a cloth. Then they used a small tractor to run out the helicopter, "said Vice President Carl Meyer to SVD.

At the same time that the robbers themselves were on the wings they could easily knock out the police's own helicopters. So they got a big head start for the spectacular robbery.

The police believed that the robbers had placed a fake bomb on the police helicopter. But police said that it was real explosives.

Must have been a pilot without pay...for there are not many of them

Must've been a particularly gigantic helo to have stolen Sweden...

Or is it that the BBC can't speak proper English anymore?

A German helo pilot told me his country's aviation authority looks into the financial background of pilots before issuing licences to ensure criminal temptation cannot be put in their way.

Obviously that's not necessary here. Who needs a multi-million pound share of a bank heist when you're bubbling along nicely on trial lessons. Plus we're British and we don't do that sort of thing.

So poor people aren't allowed to learn to fly helos incase they decide to rob a bank one day??! How does the aviation authority decide whether a pilot is rich enough to have a licence? Someone tell me this is nonsense!

I think they investigate your credit history just like a bank does to evaluate the risk not if you're rich or poor!

I know this comment isn't politicaly correct, but:

What a great stunt!!

About the earlier comment about the german CAA looking into your financial background, that's not true! Otherwise I would never have gotten my commercial ticket ;-)

Two things I like to say about this.

Cool stunt! (I am not saying it was right though)

Bad to the Swedish Police for not having a guard 24/7 at the hangar.

Well there are three things... German and Swedish Police, My salary is pretty good so don't go chasing after me.

Not only doing the run down, but writing up the flight.......

'Stole helicopter, loaded up with fellow bad guy's, flew to target rooftop, broke in, stole the cash, made clean getaway to forest landing site'.

I guess that the pilot never signed the entry!

Doubt that we'll see a new member posting a blogg with onboard video footage detailing how it was done!

Heli Heist

I can hear the clatter of screen play writers tapping away madly to get this on the big screen, no doubt we will have the Oceans 11 crew "doing the business" within a year or so.
Also in the real world I reckon police might be watching to see who is out ordering a nice new Helicopter all of a sudden CASH DEPOSIT??

Looks like they have been caught!!

"Not quite a Hollywood ending!!"

Stockholm - Six people have been arrested as part of the ongoing probe into last week's daring heist when thieves used a helicopter to raid a security firm in Stockholm, according to court officials on Monday.

The tally was revealed when the Sodertorn district court announced that defence attorneys have been named for a further five suspects, who were arrested at the weekend.

Leif Silbersky, one of Sweden's best-known attorneys said on Sunday he had met with a 34-year-old suspect alleged to have flown the stolen helicopter but he declined to offer any details.

The criminals used a stolen helicopter and explosives in the early morning raid on Wednesday at the G4S cash depot in the suburb of Vastberga.
The six men were aged between 21 and 38. Custody hearings must be held latest at noon (10.00GMT) on Wednesday.

They escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, having given themselves a headstart by planting a fake bomb near the police helicopter that would have been used in any pursuit.

The criminals' helicopter was later found abandoned in a field north of the Swedish capital. G4S has offered a reward of 1 million dollars for information leading to arrests.

Aviation experts said the pilot who flew the helicopter was likely very skilled, citing the pre-dawn flight to the depot building and the location of landing site close to high trees. - Sapa-dpa
