HAI Heli Expo 2009

Happy New Year to all.
Just a quick question about Heli Expo.
Which host city usually has the best turn out in terms of aircraft on display at Heli Expo, is it Anaheim, Las Vegas, Huston or Orlando?
I know it is a strange question but as I live in Australia and a busted ass pilot (financially) I cant afford to go to all of them unfortunately, I really want to go to the best one.

Thanks in advance

The show is only once a year and it moves back and forth across the US. Last year it was in Houston, the year before in Orlando and this year in Anaheim. They always have a good turnout in aircraft. Last year was a good display as they had the EC225 and EC175 plus the Sikorsky X2. HAI should have an online copy of their show guide online soon which will tell you who is coming and quite possibly what they will be showing. This year promises to be an interesting show.

No it is not. It is open to the public. Go on the HAI website and checkout the tickets. There MAY be some events within the Expo that could be by invitation only. These are usually manufacturers' events.

This industry is way too small to be that elitist. Usually the Sunday show has a lot of general public attending. It is an excellent way to show them who we are and what we do.

Because nobody has actually said it, Is there a particular venue that seems to have more helicopters on display because one of them is a bigger venue?

starflex3,

With the possible exception of Las Vegas (always a draw), the venues don't have much influence on numbers. Though Anaheim tends to be a popular venue for military shows (allowing servicemen to take their families), there have been so many events held in FL in recent years that the shine has probably worn off for civvy attendees.

The attendance figures for the past 11 years were as follows:

1998 (Anaheim) = 12,300
1999 (Dallas) = 11,700
2000 (Las Vegas) = 13,750
2001 (Anaheim) = 11,700
2002 (Orlando) = 11,824
2003 (Dallas) = 12,877
2004 (Las Vegas) = 15,152
2005 (Anaheim) = 14,000
2006 (Dallas) = 16,628
2007 (Orlando) = 14,806
2008 (Houston) = 17,373

The biggest deciding factor is usually the phase of the market cycle (i.e. upswing or downswing). Given the current recession and the lack of any major new iron on display, I wouldn't expect Heli-Expo '09 to be a record year.

I/C

Interesting that you say that as it counters what I have been told by the various manufacturers.

Anaheim generally has one of the larger static displays because of the saturation of helicopters on the west coast of the USA and its a good market for manufacturers.

For an Aussie going to Heli Expo its also the cheapest option as Qantas, Air NZ etc fly SYD, BNE, MEL direct to LAX so its easy to get there.

Hope that helps.

Heli Expo 2009 Who's Going?

Dear all,

My good self and my missus will be attending Heli Expo in 6 weeks time, who else is coming along, Captain Hollywood etc etc?

Any snippets of any highlights of anything being revealed there? S-76D unveiled?

Quickie to those that have been to Anaheim before, take it the locals, LAPD, LASD, LAFD, LAcoFD all bring their Astars, 412, Sea King and Firehawks along?

Cheers

Chopper 2004, I think the question should be who is going to launch what this year in these financial times? Think I will try a new thread with that as header.

I'll be going. I'm a long time Orange County resident. If anyone needs suggestions are far has restaurants etc. If I can be of any assistance to anyone, let me know. Of course I'm always available to test fly any equipment but I will not hold my breath on that one.

HAI came and went without a whisper on PPRune!

Any new helicopter announcements, like a delivery date for the Bell 429. Anybody get a ride in one (I think Bell was going to fly a test machine there)?

Who won the duel of the mockups - the S76D or the EC175?

Did Sikorsky throw the best party again, or did some new player eclipse them by booking some first-name act?

What was Lynn Tilton wearing?

Quote from the LA Times: "The woman with long blond hair was signing glossy photos of herself as a line formed in front of her exhibit booth. "I thought she was a stripper," said Costa, a helicopter pilot from Tulare, Calif., before he found out that the woman was Lynn Tilton, the owner of one of the nation's largest helicopter makers."

The 175 without a doubt - brilliant 10 seat cabin configuration that puts bigger a/c to shame.
