Across the Atlantic in a R44
Hi there;
Just for your info:
If you guys and girls understand the Danish language, you should click in on helikopterpilot.dk and read an on-going article from one of the two pilots in a R44, making a flight from Quebec in Canada to Torp in Norway ..
Its a great, interesting and exciting story being tolled while they are doing it incl. great pictures, and many people are just waiting to read the next update after another ..
Right now they have made it to Iceland ..
The norwegian pilot onboard has a website: Crossing the Atlantic
NB: This is no mean an attempt of moving members from one forum to another, just that this is quite an interesting story and if people can read the language, you should read the article ..

JimBall. I can't tell. Just know from their article that they have turned in the shotgun on Iceland ..
For notice: The other pilot, who is writing the on-going article, is from Greenland and among other things a former policeman and well-known to the geographic and weather around Greenland ..

What a wondrous age we live in! Polar bears, glaciers & a citizenry allowed by governments to tool around in personal helicopters. I count myself fortunate to live in these times. Hope we've still got all three when my kids are my age.

I wish safe journey to Dan and Arve.
When my instructor told me that this R44 was bought by Hillsboro graduates and they'd FLY it HOME soon, I felt little envy (ownership) and fear (imagined me covering such distances over 'hostile' land in R44 - no thanks).
Well, got Jennifer Murray's 'Broken Journey' about their Pole to Pole in LongRanger and she mentions in the prologue that she flew R44 East-West around the globe. Think she mentioned she had the chopper swapped for new one by RHC or Smithsonian. Good deal :-D
That takes some 'balls'. I'm flying R22 now and I can't imagine doing such transcontinental flights in R44 - even with special aux tank in the cabin as HeliStars guys had installed.
FACT Pilot, I think if one can plan and pull off such trip and purchase the gear, they aren't in desperate need to hour build. Got your drift though.

Dan isn't flying the 44 home, it is Arve and Johan flying, personal reasons why Dan isn't flying, so they got a instructor from the school to fly the helicopter from Hillsboro (where it all started) to New York (safety pilot), then the instructor went home, and Johan stept in in quebeck and is going to fly the helicopter the rest of the way to Torp Norway, as a safety pilot.
Just know from their article that they have turned in the shotgun on Iceland ..
, they handed the shotgun over to the customs authorities in Iceland and since they no longer in polar bear territory after leaving Iceland they donīt need it. Itīs to much hassle in Europe to carry guns from country to country. I imported the gun to this country and will give it good home 
They left for Faroye islands this morning.

Hey guys... Johan here...
We've reached Shetland Islands today. We expect to leave to Bergen, Norway tomorrow (monday) and that will be the end of our trip. I'm planning to interpret my article, of aprox. 14 pages, to english and post it here... Pictures included.

Congrats Copterhansen. Did the trip a couple of times a few years back in Bell 222s. Similar route to yourselves. I'll be listening out for you tomorrow. I'll be flying a CHC 225 to the Shetland basin tomorrow morning.

You guys are certainly brave crossing all that Ice and cold water in the single R44, I know they have a nearly bullet proof engine, but the cold water and ice didnt look that inviting, but what an journey, thank you for all the posted high quality pictures, I almost felt as though I was sat in the back seat looking over your shoulder.
