Night Beetle. I get my info by talking to the (ex)Timor and Solomon and PNG Crews. Also the company put out a newsletter for the crews and staff.
The Puma has not been replaced and PDL / Helicorp tried to slip their 412 in there but the AFP said NO!
It would seem that anyone who has had to deal with the PDL man in Sydney has a very low opinion of his management technique. (rule by terror) This method is applied to his own staff (and clients) and he likes his on site managers to follow his lead. (minihims). It has been conjectured that his whole handling of the Puma contract renewal and consequent departure was all part of his scheme to get Helicorp in there. A 412 to replace a Super puma ????? The 412 performance shortfalls are so obvious they don’t need discussing. Surprised that the AFP union allows their men to go without capable 24 hour emergency cover.

Semi. I wasn’t there for that situation so cannot comment and don’t even know if we are talking the same trainer. An experienced friend of mine was checked by the old VFR guy there now and certainly had only good comments on the training. As for the OVERRIDE comments in a later post after yours, no one I spoke to is surprised that this might have happened. But there is a new VFR CP with a good reputation now??

LongLine. As shown in my earlier post, it is pretty well agreed that if the top management don’t change there is no hope for the rest of the company to make things better. Over the last couple of years the owners have hired QUITE a number of mid management people for no change to the general Modus Operandi of the company. One of the crews I speak to thinks there may be as many “management” and admin staff as there are crews bringing in the revenue. Getting top heavy? At least the new HeviLift CEO has a long term aviation background. BUT, considering the past hevilift Management hiring sucess I guess I will have to ask around about this "background". Maybe there is too much optimism about his chances of improving things.

The realy sad bit of info to come to me: The non flying IFR CP revealed more of his qualifications for the job. It was so bad (to my thinking) that I took the time to get this from a couple of witness sources.
A long term Solomon Line Pilot, who was chasing up the Insurance clarification situation, had a conversation with the CP about it.
LP. says that the CP should be the one doing the chasing up.
CP. says Not my problem.
LP. You’re the CP therefore it is part of your responsibility to look after the crews.
CP. I DON’T GIVE A S**T ABOUT THE F*****G CREWS.
LP. You have to it IS your responsibility.
CP. That is your opinion and opinions are like A***holes – everyone has one.
LP. And some people are A***holes.
Apparently there were a few hanging jaws around the table.
Wonder what the CP will do about his GAFFE. Nothing? He has a reputation for not doing a lot anyway.

If you bagging Ant Annan then you have your head up your arse. Ant is an excellent pilot, superb training Captain and an asset to the management team at HL.
Monty is another top bloke - quick to engage you in conversation, polite, hyper experienced and great in command.

The HL PNG operations offers the best conditions and stability of any of the PNG operators. If you want to see shonky, spend a day in the other guys camp.

Nobody is perfect - I would work for HL anytime... if they could afford me

Who was bagging "Tail boom Tony"?? I certainly didn't read it that way. The trainers at HL are good, both VFR and IFR, never heard anyone anywhere say otherwise. As far as I know HL do pay more than the other PNG operators, take-home pay helped by lower tax threshold from 50:50 splitting, and for those on peacekeeping deployments there are lower tax rates still. However recent reports indicate changes for the worse on the tax front. As for stability of employment, HL is much the same as the others. They have people who have been working there for a long time. But long time employee or not they can still march your arse out the door at a moments notice, or no notice at all. As for the senior management, it's their train set and they can do what they want, and people will vote with their feet, or they might not get a vote at all.

The pay rates in PNG aren't helped by the operators trying to cut each others throats with the clients, that's why the PNG pay rates can't compete with Australian rates at the moment. The contract rates being asked of the clients are just not there (there are even aircraft on some contracts earning less than what they cost to crew and maintain!). Also why there are very few Aussies still working in PNG, most of them have gone home to earn more money!! Bloggs does seem to have the inside scoop on what's going on at HL, I'm hearing the same thing from other sources so it must be true! The IFR CP is a known issue at HL, but he is probably very good at some things (and not just coffee drinking)...I've heard it suggested he could gain more respect by swallowing a 2nd loaf of bread at dinner rather than ranting anti-pilot sentiments.

Ultimately the Chairman is right, if you want to see shining examples of shonky, you don't have to look too far in PNG.

If anyone thinks that the "insurance" problem at Hevilift has been over accentuated, just read the latest posts on the 212 accident offshore Dubai. Aerogulf is a company run with a LOT more integrity than HL ever will and they still got it wrong.
If the "management" tried to put it over a client with non IFR helicopter it is very easy to believe they would try to save money by putting it over the crews on insurance.
It would be such a simply thing to resolve. Just have the Insurance Broker produce the Personal Accident cover note copmplete. HL USED to have one.

Bloggs, you said something about checking on who/what the new HL CEO is/was. been in contact with a couple of ex National Jet (australia) crews. This man JS and his family ran this outfit at one time. All one of my contacts would say about him is GOOD LUCK!! He had no qualifications for what his position in Nat Jet and he has even less to be running helicopters. The other said "Be aware that all his smoke and mirrors flim flam are doing is hiding the rapidly moving goal posts".
I was also told that there was a thread on Nat Jet in pprune and it was pretty nasty in the condemnation of JS. Cannot find it.
This CEO will probably type up something himself about the insurance and it will have no validity as proof at all.
One last thing. Bloggs you were wondering what the IFR CP would do about his gaffe. Simple, he "terminated" that longest serving IFR pilot in HL! That will teach anyone to tell him his responsibilities. Now he has no one to explain the PNG CARs to him. The best example was when IFR CP read the CARs to mean 212/412s couldn't land in confined areas

It would appear from the info in this thread that HL leaves a bit to be desired as an employer if you're a MEIFR or medium driver. Is it the same story for the SEVFR drivers? With ample experience on B206/AS350 models, longline etc could I expect a better deal in Australia? Every company has internal political issues which can be difficult to remain neutral in & everyone has a different threshhold in managing these politics, but with a month on/month off roster surely this could be managed? I suppose it is all a matter the money bucket in one hand vs the **** bucket in the other hand. When the money bucket is empty & the **** bucket full people move on. Vice versa & people stay. Are the SEVFR drivers moving on as well?

Question

Greetings to all, I am new to the site and this is my first post. I am a 21 year career helicopter pilot and I have followed closely this discussion on HL as I am considering international work. At this point in my career, ex mil but bored with stateside pay and stupid schedules, I am looking for positions working 30/30 or 60/30 with commensurate pay. My research in overseas opportunities has been pointing me to the East Timor/PNG environment, as well as Iraq/Afghanistan. I have a good friend who worked in PNG as a mechanic and had generally good things to say about HL. As a (FAA) CPL, ME and IFR rated pilot, can anyone recommend other potential employment options where I may be able to avoid being carved up on Al Jazeera or having my head shrunk?

Bloggs, unfortunately not all crews at Hevilift were kept on, even if they wished, due to positions not being available. However they seem to have been paid out reasonably well.
Rumour has it that the Helicorp (read PDL/Toll, as Helicorp appears nowhere on the machines) 412 on the East Timor contract has been U/S since it's first job in the country. Something to do with a transmission problem. Unsure of how true it is, but it must be impressing the ADF if it is true.

Word is that HL are in the running with a fair chance at the Esso contract in PNG, so if they get that then those previously let go will probably be begged to return. Anyone with PNG time should be well placed whoever wins the contract as I'm to understand that PNG time will be a requirement for Captains. That will shallow the pool of available pilots (as if it weren't shallow enough already) and hopefully up the pay rates towards current rates in Australia.

Is there a new CP at Hevilift?

Does HL have a new CP? Does the CP have any autonomy to make the necessary changes?

I think the old CP is still doing it but in a defacto sense until the new CP-elect gets through the perfect person process with CAA.

Thanks mate, glad to see HL hasn't totally lost their marbles. Would that be IC in the IFR slot? or am I really behind the times.
