Hi all,
in todays newspaper
Laser-Attacke: Co-Pilot für Sekunden blind - Ruhr Nachrichten
there is a story of an EMS helicopter beeing lasered on a returnflight.
The pilot called in the police and chased the car of the laserguy, who later left his car and escaped first by running.
He was later identifed.
Legal action is under way.
Hope he get the right punishment.

For those of you who do not already know this:

It has become some kind of (pervert) "sport" to hunt helicopters and planes with laser pointers.
On youtube and co you can find lots of instructions about how to turn a 5$-Laser pointer into a high-energy laser pointer for just a few bucks.

Those high-energy lasers can have a variety of consequencs:
-light can be spread over the whole windscreen (spreaded by invisible scratches in the glas/plexi) overlying all the instruments..

-distracting the attention of the pilot to another point (it is just normal that the light is attracting your attention)

-with googles/glasses, the laser beam can destroy your eye in an instant-you are blind/handicaped forever (this i did not know before...and it can happen also WITHOUT googles....in case it is a manipulated laser...)

Hopefully all these "kids" are just imprisoned for doing such dangerous attacks....

Watch out...

It's calmed down on our end. The occasional 737 gets done but when we come over to tease them out they give up.

They are still at it around our way - and still getting caught. 2 weeks ago a man received a 2 year suspended sentence with costs and we've another case going to Crown Court shortly in which one of the individuals was arrested 2 nights running for the same offence!

Was that under the old "endangerment" or the new "shining a light at" law?

MG

It must have been endangering.
The maximum penalty for the new offence (intitiated by the CAA ) is a fine.
The courts aren't allowed to send someone to prison for the new offence, not even a suspended sentence.

MG - for endangering. The one that is going to Crown Court shortly was done for "Shining" on the first night and for both "Shining" & Endangering on the second night.

Yet another one...

Fortunately they caught him:

Suspect in custody after laser pointer disrupts HAWC1 flight

CALGARY - Calgary police took a suspect into custody early Tuesday morning after the flight of the HAWC1 helicopter was disrupted by someone on the ground with a laser pointer.
The helicopter was airborne in support of police operations late Monday night when a strike by a laser impaired the vision of the chopper crew, police said in a statement.
A police investigation pinpointed an address in northeast Calgary where the laser is believed to have originated, and a suspect was taken into custody.
The Calgary Airport Authority closed one runway as a precaution to ensure the safety of incoming aircraft, police added.
A police investigation is continuing.

Apologies if already suggested but:

For UK (and especially police) pilots; when submitting your MOR, on the reverse and under 'Reporting Organisation - Report', it might be worth entering how you feel these occurences are increasing again now that the punishment has changed to a slapped wrist with ANO 222.

Oh crap...

LaserMotive to Demonstrate Laser-Powered Helicopter at the AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2010
LaserMotive August 23, 2010

LaserMotive, an independent R&D company specializing in laser power beaming and winner of the 2009 NASA-sponsored Power Beaming Challenge, has announced that it will be showcasing a demonstration model of a laser-powered remote controlled helicopter at the AUVSI Unmanned Systems North America 2010 Conference, August 24 - 27 in Denver, Colo., booth #227.

The demonstration model, which uses a tethered remote-controlled helicopter, is eye-safe and has been designed to fit inside LaserMotive's booth at the show. In lab tests conducted by LaserMotive, the laser-powered helicopter has flown for nearly two hours, making it the longest duration laser-powered helicopter flight on record. The helicopter will be flown all day long during the four-day Conference, the company said.

"The ability to fly an unmanned helicopter for this length of time using laser power beaming is an important technological advance for unmanned aerial vehicles," said Tom Nugent, President of LaserMotive. "Not only does this provide a way for UAVs to be powered in flight without the need for fuel, but it potentially can extend their abilities and enable new missions."

The system uses laser power beaming -- the wireless transfer of energy over distances using laser light -- to provide a virtually endless supply of power to the helicopter. It is safe to the eye, and based on technology the company developed for its winning entry in the 2009 Power Beaming Challenge for a purse prize of nearly $1 million, marking the first time any team ever won the Challenge.

I agree with you that laser pens are quite harmless even lower watt green laser pointer for example 5mW, the ones used in astronomy to point at stars that maybe hurt somebody, that's a stupid, so be careful!

"Arrest over Pope helicopter laser"

And so it continues...

BBC News - Arrest over Pope helicopter laser

Personally, I find the BBC's reporting of this one a bit strange - from my reading of the article the Pope was never on the helicopter, but I guess it makes for a good headline.

At this moment there is NO protection possible against lasers......

The problem is the differing wave length of the different kind of laser available..

A visor/screen/glasses with a protection against ALL kinds of laser beams would just be a black screen...you could not see through it...

Richard,

The filter lenses are for class B lasers........we use them, but I have not seen them on civilian side........except with science tweakers. You might can to ours and make some ozzy osbourne glasses But, as you said, it will still not protect against all lasers.

Helicopter L@ser Conviction

Medford man convicted of shining laser at helicopter

A thoroughly appropriate result I thought, and much stronger than anything in the UK so far.

Genghis, how can you say that? The courts went as far as confiscating a laser pointer and issuing a small fine in UK last week!
About time we went down the route of chopping their B******s off - a fitting punishment I feel! Reckon any of the political parties would support that?
