Been discussed here before. It is either a crack in the magneto housing or it is oil getting onto the magneto pickups.

Had a similar thng happen after a check, whilst doing the ground run. It happened twice and was diagnosed as an engineer leaving oil inside the magnetos.

The Robinson 44 ICS Panel

Our syndicate is speccing our new 44.

We are using the Garmin 420 for Comm 2 and it talks about needing the NAT AA12s Stereo Controller to replace the AA83 intercom that comes as standard.

3 Questions

1. Have I read the * on the price list right. Do we need the NAT AA12 upgrade to use the garmin 420 as comm 2.
2. What are the advantages of the AA12s over the standard unit.
3. Can i plug my ipod in and if so does it hard wire a cable in the unit rear or plug into the aux behind the collective like our old Raven 1.

I know this is a common fit in the US so anyone who has had experience that they could share?

I don't know that much about Robinsons, but what I have heard and read is that the standard ICS system is very poor. You can't adjust the volume for each headset individually, and if there is any mismatch between them, one will be almost inaudible. It seems it's the cheapest thing they could get away with. You need an upgrade to it in any case.

I'm sure actual Robbie drivers will be along to give more specific, and perhaps more accurate, advice.

If you want to replace the intercom, you could use a Garmin GMH 340 which you will need with the 420. It will also interface with an ipod. It may be worth thinking about a KMD 150 MFD as well
We have all the above in our Enstrom 480 and found them easy to use and reliable.

I have the AA12s with the 420 in my Raven II. It's Robinson's choice for an audio panel when a second com radio is required, the stock panel does not have enough inputs. The aux input for your iPod is still in the same location behind the collective with the AA12s.

There are other options for audio panels with more features, like built in cell phone interface. The PS Engineering PMA8000B is an example:http://www.ps-engineering.com/pma8000b.shtml

The NAT AA12s Stereo Controller fitted in my Raven 2 works exceptionally well. I also had factory fitted Bose Lemo plugs. Music via the aux socket to iPod is perfect.
Did I read somewhere that Robinson WILL NOT accept responsibility/suitability for any other after market fit for compatibility ?. One thing to note about the GMA340 is that this is primarily for the fixed wing market and the P1 and P2 positions (volume & sq) will be the wrong way round, so to adjust P1 you will go to the left of the panel as opposed to naturally going to your right. (R44 P1 right). When fitted to the Enstrom its OK because P1 is on the left.

Optional equipment

Robinson does not authorize installation of electrical equipment without their approval. This is stated in their maintenance manual. Also, on the price list, there is this note:
-
CAUTION: To prevent possible control system interferences or malfunction of the electronic tachometers, electronic RPM governor or low RPM warning system, no field installation of avionics, lights or other items requiring internal wiring is permitted without written approval by RHC.

Actually no. The 340 comes in three versions, one of which is the 340H with the pilot adjust on the right and co pilot on the left (also a dual ADF version if you really like NDB approaches).

You can see the H version on my machine if you are at Gamston (close to your location).

I think the std audio fit will accept a second radio - I used to operate two via this with each radio having an on/ off and both via some small and annoying small silver switches, but the 340 makes a lot of difference for usage and would also be neccesary for taking the audio feeds from radnav instruments for identing.

R44 Resonance

Recently I flew an R44 Raven 2. It was fine in the air but I noticed on powering down and switching off the clutch switch that there was quite a lot of for and aft movement of the entire machine. This occurred shortly before needle separation. I tried moving the stick into wind but it made little difference. Is there any procedure to reduce this? (a little throttle perhaps?)

Could be un-even ground - but better still try to centralise the stick for least control panel movement.

Cholmondeley - I'd think it would have something to do with stick position, rather than wind velocity. Try moving the stick fore and aft (very gently) until you find a sweet spot and the rocking motion stops. If you look up and behind - from the left hand seat - you'll see significant mast rock if you've got the stick in the wrong place. Hope that helps. WW

Find the cyclic (C of) G spot. It's the only game in town for the 30 seconds it takes the clutch to disengage and the 30 seconds before you can apply the rotor brake!

Still, it's easier to find than the corresponding one on the girlfriend!

R44: Engine Failure/ Hydraulics Q

You must be joking! This is supposed to be a Professional Pilots ....etc etc.

Ask your instructor, read the Flight Manual, ask how the system works.

The hydraulic pump is driven by the transmission. Therefor, if the rotor is turning there should be a touch of hydraulic pressure!

Why the techiness? whilst Pprune Rotorheads is for the Pro's, there are many private pilots who take much quality info from this site, I for one have found any question you care to ask on Rotorheads will be answered with deep involvement from many WORLDWIDE vGood pilots, ... Chill out man we are'nt all A1 experts.....!!
