life insurance
can anybody help? i am a 36yo below 100hr ppl(h) and never had life insurance before.since taking up flying her indoors thought it would be a good idea to take out a policy on me,so we had a budget quote of x amount per month which i thought was reasonable, then the application form came through the post (bet you know whats coming)i filled it in and explained in it that i owned and flew a helicopter, sent it off and thought no more about it.then a week later my broker came back and told me that the monthly payments were now 4 times the original budget.i suppose this is the norm in the helicopter world any ideas???

Life & medical insurance for UK
After my recent small incident, I find out that my medical insurance now doesn't cover me, even though it did when I originally took out the policy, something in small print apparently at last renewal.
Therefore I am looking at all my insurance and thankfully it doesn't mater about the original policy.
I am struggling to find companies who will cover a UK helicopter pilot for health insurance & life insurance, has anyone got any suggestions and recommendations please.
Thanks RB

Balpa financial services provide quite a good Loss of Licence, but you need to be a member, they would probably be able to point you in the right direction for other insurances.

Hi RB.
Sovereign were high profile in the fixed term cover for aviators. I took out a ten year life policy with them a long time ago very reasonably. They were taken over by Legal & General a few years ago. Might be worth giving them a call. Heywards add accident cover for the pilot on to their aircraft policy but at 500 quid a year it doesnt strike me as cheap. What do you think in light of your experience? what sort of costs did you incur?
Hope the sore bits are getting better!

HSBC
Hello Rotorboater,
I have had problems with all the major companies when I first started to fly, eventually Norwich union done me a policy with hours restricted to 100 per year - great for me as a PPL but useless for commercial boys and girls.
I now have a policy with life cover only with HSBC without any hour limitation.
Regards
Richard
PS try everyone even those that were crap last time - they seem to change their policy towards sectors on a regular basis - or how about work taking a policy out for all of you - ie death in service is quite cheap for a company to do (I know I am doing it for my staff at the moment) and they do not want individual details for members of staff joining the policy.

CHC used to cover me for Loss of Licence but take it out of my salary and then I was paying for the old codgers as well and hence me and some of my colleagues opted out and got our own since it was cheaper.
Just my two pennies.

Life Insurance
Nervy,
If you work for an operator with an AOC and hold an ATPL(H) I have just had life insurance with no penalties attached. Taken out at age 40, £150,000 cover at £11.69 a month. PM me I will give you contact details of the broker I got it through.

I asked my financial adviser to suggest I was covered by the policy only when flying as a passenger on a commercial airline.
That way my policy reduced from over GBP80 to GBP21 per month for GBP250,000 of life assurance cover. I might be taking a risk assuming that company insurance will cover me for any eventuality that occurs whilst flying as a crew member.
The first life assurance policy I set up was better as they didn't ask what I do for a living. So I managed GBP7 a month for GBP100,000 cover.

Nervy - PM if you want the details for the financial adviser I use as he has sorted this exact problem for me this year. He has a name of an underwriter at AVIVA (Norwich Union) who he has dealt with and I don't see why he can't get another policy based on the existing conditions of a policy already in place.
Anyone know of the most competitive life insurance for helicopter pilots?
Hi all.
I got my insurance proposal back today, and they were charging £157 per month for something the quoted as £40 initially because I'm a helicopter pilot. You'd swear we were killing crashing aircraft left and right! It's for £400k of cover for me and my wife.
If you could help I'd be extremely grateful: do you know of a specialty insurer for pilots that isn't a rip-off?
thanks!

I came up against the same problem. £40 a month for ordinary joe. over double that once you say you're a pilot. Rip off.
I ended up getting a special policy that excluded any cover whilst I was flying at work. Considering you're more likely to get killed on the roads, heart attack, in the street etc. than flying.

Critical Illness Cover for Pilots
Boys and Girls
I'm currently renewing/taking out various policies to insure myself and I'm finding that cover is being offered subject to certain exclusions/restrictions because of my aviating.
One policy will cover me with no limitations if I fly less than 75hrs per year per discipline (i.e 75 rotary and 75 fixed) but that doesn't help me as I exceed that by miles (or hours ;-) ).
Another will cover me except for any critical illness derived as a direct result of my aviating. This therefore means if I develop some form of 'critical illness' and they can attribute it to me being a pilot they wont cover me.
My broker has queried these exceptions on the basis that private (and probably commercial) flight is less risky than some other common activities (aren't there more deaths per year in horse-riding accidents than in flying ?) however they're not budging.
Am I digging my heels in unnecessarily or are there any ideas you might have?
