Sas,

Leave poor Chuks alone !! Maybe he's dreaming that he's going to be a 747 cruise Captain like his old ex Dornier bosom buddy. Perhaps that's why he did the licence !!

I think he'll miss the cut and thrust (especially since he was a big part of it), and maybe we'll see him in Paradise again, especially now the jets are staying for a while.

As long as you keep me out of it Chuks, not like that time when loose lips nearly sank ships................

Hoh, bloody hoh!

I have been living in what passes for civilisation for eight months now and it's beginning to wear on me a bit. Crowds rushing along all focused on getting somewhere so they can turn around and go rushing back, no time for a craic... what is the point of all this? Umm, making money, I guess! It can be a shock to the system, that is for sure. In some ways the life in West Africa, for an expat, is a pampered one.

On the other hand, where once culture consisted of reading about stuff in the Torygraph and catching the odd 'art' movie on the satellite channel, here in London I can go to wonderful museums and galleries or even just walk around gawking at the sights. There was not much of that in Isolo, last time I checked. An exhibition of portraits of Kim Jong Il at the People's Democratic Republic of Korea Embassy Annexe would have been about it, I guess, but I was too nervous of being abducted to use the free ticket I had found in my specially-marked can of 'Glorious Leader' brand kimchee.

I thought that 747 guy went to Virgin Nigeria to be their Chief Pilot. What happened then?

NEO, one tiny, tiny indiscretion does not make me a total blabbermouth. Or perhaps it does... It might be that as the beer flowed in all the guilty secrets came floating to the top and spilled out. So, mea culpa. Flog me, beat me, whatever.

On the other hand, put your hand on your heart and tell us that you never, unlike practically every other barfly we know including myself, must sometimes have been cruising along in 'periscope down' mode having totally forgotten to submerge! Or it could simply be that they have that bar 'bugged.'

If that bar was "bugged", the Untouchables must have some very thick skin!

From the Middle of the Two Congo's

Well Things are going well these days in Malongo with the new Company Heli Malongo. All new 430 Bells and 427 Bells.
Good conditions and life is good but somewhat restrictive as you live in a compound and at this stage there are no pass outs.
Salary is $79,600 USD clear per year and as yet no benefits. Things should be on the move pay wise in the coming 6 months.
Would appreciate a link to the West African Salary scales for CHC if somebody can help. It’s helpful to all to share this info and keep pushing for increases across the whole West Coast.

Thumbs down

Well, the start of July has come and gone and the silence about any pay review for either CHC or Bristow is deafening I guess neither of them is really serious about getting enough pilots for Nigeria then. They've both had long enough to take some serious steps but continue losing pilots either to other operators or other regions. The larger the companies get, the more completely paralysed by inertia they seem to be. There's always a lot of criticism here about the Middle East and how companies like Abu Dhabi Aviation and Gulf have done nothing to increase salaries for years, with huge staff turnovers. Bristow and Aero are beginning to look like Third World, third rate operators as well. Looks as if Europe is the only place either of them pay a decent wage and offer good conditions of service

I have £50 down on 'Six and Six with a Pay Adjustment' at 2-1 odds and I believe they are coming under starter's orders any day now. Of course I also had £50 on England to take the World Cup, so what do I know, really? The ones who know don't tell and the ones who tell don't know but don't let that get in the way of a good rumour.

Pay review

Are CHC and Bristows waiting to see who gives first? If there is such a need for pilots there, are they just waiting on one making a move first, so that they can offer an extra bead to fill the holes fastest? Meanwhile, as people are leaving - what number of seats actually need filling?

Question Bristow Pay Rise?

I heard a rumour from a source (not in Bristow) that they may have just had a 10% pay rise. Anybody heard anything more substantive - NEO?

Mommy,
We were told 10.8% raise as of 1st of July for those going 6/6, with 25% pay adjustmends for 8/4 candidates. Good to hear the figure of around 10% from other sources, substantiates what would otherwise be done away with as "rumours". Let the good times roll!

Shame we couldn't have had a 25% rise a few years ago; I might still be wearing my Bob the builder tie pin!

110 percent for working six weeks of twelve or 125 percent for working eight weeks of twelve???? A 15% pay rise for working two extra weeks?

Is my grade school math tricking me here?

The travel time must be getting to PeeWee and the Major!

Must be the same idiot that came up with the 7/5 rotation.

Now just who in their right mind would prefer to work two weeks more per cycle when paid on a monthly routine with the same pay while on leave at home or in country working?

Now I see the pattern....

Assumptions: Base pay 80,000 UKP per annum, 4.33 cycles of 12 weeks per annum.

Factor in the 10% pay rise for the 6/6 (7/5) gives 88,000 UKP per annum.
Factor in the 25% pay rise for the 8/4 gives 100,000 UKP per annum.

6/6 roster means 181 work days on average per annum.
7/5 roster means 212 work days on average per annum.
8/4 roster means 242 work days on average per annum.

Per day rates then work out to be.... 486 UKP, 415 UKP, 413 UKP respectively per work day.

The extra 61 days per year for the 8/4 roster over the 6/6 roster equals a grand total of 12,000 UKP per annum which means a per day rate of 196 UKP for the extra 61 work days in excess of those worked on the 6/6 roster.

Hell of a pay cut to work over-time I would say.

At least they have a pay rise, and delivered within days of the pay review date. For CHC crews the silence is deafening and with Bristow now apparently offering 8/4 or 6/6 I expect a large number of CVs to be getting sent from C to B this week

Ok....Ok....it is Dollars vice Pounds! I posted after a long enjoyable afternoon at the Legion Hall celebrating the Fourth by killing a fifth!

That makes it even worse....less than 200 USD for the extra 61 days worked.

I should hope the 8/4 line is very short....however I bet someone out there will think it a deal with all that "extra" money.

Just plug your real pay check into the assumed base and take it from there.

There are always those who wish to complain, but we have at least increased our pay unlike our competitor. You must realise that we know best as we always have done. There is no pilot shortage and everything is rosy as it always has been. We have just given a massive pay rise to show our enduring goodwill towards all our staff and to get one over our competitors who, as everyone knows are incapable of making a decision and seem to have inherited some of that Dutch tightness with their money since they bought out Schreiner.
