What's New In W. Africa (Nigeria)

It certainly smoothed the way for the 155 buy.
Can anyone comment on what a disaster the 155's were? I only know the main transmission was junk, which is not a minor thing.

You might be right Sultan
But the fact is that the Shell operation in PH, Warri and Lagos is going extremely well for Caverton, and shell is happy about it. 4-5 out of the 6 shell 155 is now running and crewing them has become the next problem. The 3 DC wetlease are also up and running and has been since they arrived in August and September. Shell is also happy about the payload from these 3 helicopters.

Junk Xmsn
I think what was being referred to is the repeitive uppper epicyclic gear borescope inspection, for cracks............ which is worrying, of course. But not if you find them before migration becomes catastrophic. I think it is precautionary, and the more so since last year's deperate N Sea event. VFR

I thought Shell's main problem with the 155 in Nigeria was the engine deterioration in the early days.
Is Caverton really operating well or has Shell just scaled its expectations back??

Can’t ever remember the transmission being ‘junk’, as far as serviceability goes.
There was an upper epicyclic gear boroscope inspection…on all EC155s and AS365s, every 50 hrs after a gear carrier was found cracked during an overhaul inspection…and the g/box was not from one of the Shell machines I might add.
The boroscope inspection was exactly that, took about an hour, no big deal and a precautionary measure I feel. Otherwise, I would say that the transmission was fine. Don't remember many instances of chips and all the g/box replacements I did were for 'due o/haul'.
Yes, the Arriel 2C1 was crap in Nigeria. Just not up to the job and was what let the 155B down in that operating environment. Continuous compressor water rinsing and very regular chemical washing went some way to extend their life.
Turbomeca made moves to rectify the situation, I can’t remember what; but I know I wasn’t replacing as many engines towards the end of my time there as I was at the beginning.

I visited their compound in Lagos off Adeniyi Jones and it was rubbish. Pokey little bar and no sporting facilities or pool. Had a friend who worked there and was rarely paid on time and is still owed money . I wonder what big Barry thinks about them and if he was paid when he was sacked as a lovely Christmas present

I don't know about that but I was with Bristows for 38 years and stayed in a lot of manky places(some good ones too),I wasn't too impressed with them when I left either.Would never have happened when Allan was in charge!!
