I've had a Gentex ,Alpha and now using the Gallet LH 150 which in my opinion is far superior to the other brands in comfort and consrtuction quality.
The noise attention is not as good as the Alpha and so I use foam earplugs to compensate.

Gentex Helmet parts
Hi All.
Just wondering if anyone has spare parts or know where to get them for Gentex helmets.
Im after the two parts which the visor slides up and down. They cover the visor mounts.(not sure what they are called).
Prefer white, but can repaint.

I've had an HGU56 for about 4 yrs now and am very happy with it. Replaced an old heavy SPH4. I needed as much headroom as possible (I'm tall). I specifically tried on compared the CGF with the 56 side by side & in a headroom limited 206 and the 56 was more compact on top and gave about 1" more headroom - also I like the covered dual visor, vs. the exposed variety or the one with a removable cover, also I found it more comfortable and it is relatively light. I upgraded the liner and earcups with Oregon Aero ones.
It looks quite big (wide) when on, but the top is flat and works well with the Astar long-line window. One negative is if you are flying a longline with the door off and stick your head out when in cruise, the width does catch the wind and will tug your head pretty good - you learn not to stick your head out to far at any real speed. If you are in very dusty conditions I found you have to clean the tracks that the visors run on occasionally (when they become sticky), but other wise, not problems.
I first went for a Large, but had to exchange for a Medium - my hat size is 71/4".

Thanx squirrel, I havent been able to find any one with it.
Its not that I dont like the Gallet, just Ive been really happy with my SPH-5, but its a little on the heavy side, and I could use the lower profile.

You're right on that one, I have not seen anyone else with one in the commercial industry, but it is popular with numerous police aviation units in the US as well it is the US military issue (Army I think), for whom I understand it was designed.

Helmets - which brand?
HI All
I'm looking for some advice on Helmets. I've read a lot of threads on why one should wear a helmet but was wondering which brands have a solid reputation for safety, comfort etc. Not too bothered about budget - only have one head afterall!
Gallet and Gentex I'm aware of and those pro Gentex seem to say that Gallets do not meet rotor impact specs, whereas Gentex do. (This might be out of date).
Any pointers, real experience with certain brands would be appreciated.

Go for an Alpha, I have one they are very light and comfortable. Drop me an e mail and I will pass on details of where to buy for 60% of list price.
If you don't buy an alpha make sure it has twin visors, clear and tinted.

I would say go for the Alpha helmet; had a Gentex for a while and found that unless you half strangled yourself with the strap the helmet did not feel comfortable especially doing vertical ref work. Had the Alpha for four years now and it works great. Also got the double visor. Sure it's more expensive than the Gentex but as the old Bell motorcycle ad said "If you've got a 10$ head than buy a 10$ helmet"

Just my two cents. Since you have the money, borrow one of each. I used Gentex for years and they seem to work OK. Price was free as they were Military and issued. I still have a couple. I sent one to www.flightsuits.com and they redid the electronics to be compatable with Civilian stuff. Never had problems while working in one , but I think I would have gotten it adjusted had that been the case.
Never used the Alpha but have seen it. It looks pretty good and would seem to be more comfortable.
Just about any rotor that hits your Brain Bucket while turning is going to mean at the very least an early retirement........if your lucky

the gallet and myself have been through one engine failure together..
if you get a good wack in the head i dont think any skid lid is going to help much..
other brain buckets put to much pressure on my neck and headache and neck strain is very uncomfortable..
each to their own......
