Winglets-some big some small?Some none at all
 

why does the 737-800 have such huge winglets in comparison to other aircraft which are much bigger (say 747) which have small winglets? Why don't all planes have winglets?

Not all companies put order them on their airplanes, depending on how they are used in service. In some circumstances, like short haul flights, the weight and maintenance requirements outweight any fuel savings. Also, newer wings like the 777 and 767-400 don't use winglets.

In some cases, it's just a marketing styling.

I've heard the the winglets on the 737NG is acctually worsening the performance. I.e the weight and the drag of the winglet it self exceedes the good of vortex reduction it offers.
