Experience before Type Rating
Does anyone know if it is necessary to have a valid Instrument Rating and Multi Rating before doing a Type Rating. Considering that youl will be doing an OPC and an LPC on the new type anyway, do you still need to bum around in a Seneca to renew the Multi-IR??

Multi-engine and IR is incorporated in the typerating usually, and renewed every year during the base check in the simulator. The JAA, however, makes a difference between the typerating (including IR and, offcourse ME) and the possibility to fly smaller aircraft like the Seneca, for which you need to keep up your multi-engine-piston-land-rating, and the ME-IR.

You MUST have a valid ME IR before you can start on a multi pilot type rating course. A ME piston class rating is not required. Contact me directly if you need help renewing your IR. Regards |
How come then that Airlines will employ pilots with lapsed IR's. After a conversion course they come out with an IR on type. Its pointless in my case, after being in an airline then losing my job, to renew my IR on a multi engine (single pilot) aircraft to then never exercise the privileges and to then rejoin an airline who will renew my IR on a multi engine (multi pilot ) aircraft.

Quite right Frank, pointless, that's why it does not have to be current, the only thing you need is the Multi Engine Instrument Rating on your licence. A low houred recruit is a different matter and an airline will usually only look at someone with a current IR and have recent IF practice.

I've just looked at the CAA regs and it says:
An applicant for the first type rating for a multi pilot aeroplane shall provide evidence that the following requirements have been met:- b) is the holder of a multi-engine Instrument rating Holder does not necessarily mean "Current" does it? The reason I ask is that I've been offered a job on a turbo prop and the type rating course is in 4 weeks or so. I've explained to the company that my IR has lapsed and they did not know whether I needed it current to undertake the type rating. Is this a CAA requirement or an Operators requirement? |
Yes V1rotate holder it's just that, currency does not enter the equation. Good luck with your new job, in these times that is a bit of good news, are you able to say who it's with...?

Depends on how long ago your IR lapsed. If within the last year, no problem. More than that, you may need to speak to the Campaign Against Aviation.
Less than that, and you have no problem. Your new company will have to renew your IR anyway on the new type. |
Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate it. I'll call the CAA just to be sure. It's just within a year that it has lapsed Captain Stable but I will check. Will let you know so everyone can get the score on it.

I spoke to the CAA on Thursday and was told that I did not have to have a valid IR to commence the Type Rating. CAA said to confirm with the TRTO and they (TRTO) said it would not be a problem as the IR would be renewed on the rating.
