''Stand by'' question....
When you are requesting ,let's say start up or ATC clearance, and the controller says ''stand by'', do you confirm ''standing by'' or not?
|
No! --but everyone does it anyways---so why not---or they say 'Roger'---I guess it's anxiety:}
|
Yes, so that way the guy knows that you stay tuned and ready in the sequence...

Roljoe in which country do work? because I could be wrong, but US controller have told me they hate it--- they are busy and that's the reason it was said
they is no advice in the AIM nor the FARS regarding this-- And when enough people chime in with it you'll hear "I said Standby--- Radio silence unless I ask you something!!!" I keep my mouth shut regarding STBY--ever since I was yelled at for a while ago---Never again:\ Only if they tell me 'callsign--standby--readback:} |
We once had to 'Standby On Stand 206 MAN' - No Tug :zzz::ugh:
Serously, You can also say - 'standby call you back at Taxiway 'C' etc. Or call when ready to pass the clearence. Regards.:ok: |
According to CAP 413 STANDBY means: 'Wait and I will call you'.
It is a polite way to tell somebody to shut up. It requires no response, as that goes against the idea of shutting up. |
If the controller says standby it's because he/she is doing something else and cannot give RTF calls suitable attenetion. Consequently, any reply is more on the RTF that the controller has to listen to - and he/she will have to listen just to make sure that the station calling is saying Roger and nothing more or that it isn't another aircraft calling.
OK, as a controller you get pretty good at half listening when all you're expecting is Roger, and your sub-concious picks up when you need to concentrate on the RTF - but any call in reply to an instruction to standby takes up some of the controller's thinking time when it is unnecessary. Interestingly the UK's RTF manual doesn't give clear guidance on this but implies that no reply is required - I think that the ICAO books are the same in this respect. |

Every time I hear somebody read back "standby" I can't help thinking the 3 hour student pilot that thinks everything on the radio has to be repeated. |
