Compass swings

What is the requirements for carrying out a compass swing these days? I remember carrying them out on a compass base and doing a 12 point calibration against a Watts Datum but with the advent of GPS, is this still the case. Can you compare the two and do you still have to move the aircraft around the points?

Thanks,

Saintsman

How can a GPS determine heading if it is stationary?? It calculates track when moving on the basis of "I was there then and here now so I must be going in this direction" Therefore how can it be used to compare against a magnetic compass.

Of course a compass swing is still required!

Does a GPS not give you heading? If the GPS triangulates from several satelites and the antenna fixed to the airframe can it not work it out? INS has been used to calibrate compasses before.

However, if it still needs to be swung thats fine.
