SRA - When do you choose to fly one

Just curious, How often do Airliners fly SRA approaches?
Occaisionally , just to keep in practice?
I would imagine that if an ILS or LLZ/DME is unservicable for any reason, then a SRA is perhaps preferable to a NDB/DME approach if one exists ? (My assumption as I find a SRA easier than a NDB approach - I've got a IMC rating).
Do ATC enjoy performing SRAs?

<<Do ATC enjoy performing SRAs?>>

It's quite fun... but in the days of unreliable ILS installations when one could end up doing a hundred or more in a shift they got a bit tiresome!

Did one at EGPK on Monday at ATC´s request (training/recency?). The controller was excellent....spot on the ILS at MDA.

I Havn't done one for real in 17,000+ hrs of airline flying. I've flown a few at atc request for atc training in vfr> Otherwise a good way to get dead in many places in the world. trust no one!!! Not all controlers are as well train as those in the "modern world".

In 15 years I have only ever done two for real. The rest (which is a few dozen) were requested by ATC for training/recency purposes.

Anyone who REALLY wants to fly one can visit LGW in the wee small hours when that is what you get.
