Am I correct in thinking after 1500 hours accumulated on an MPL you can apply for an ATPL? If so, is it the full ATPL effectively a CPL+IR with all the privileges?

An MPL is basically a CPL/IR that you can only use on multi pilot aircraft for one specific airline. Once you meet the ATPL requirements you can upgrade via a skills test during your next LPC/OPC if the company lets you. It's more than just 1500 hours, you'll need 100 hours night and 500 hours as PIC under supervision, which again is at the discretion of the company.

Don't know where this misconception comes from. Once the license is issued you are free to work at any airline.

However, as you didn’t complete the standard CPL/IR there is a shortfall in single pilot (SP) flying experience and the fact that the MPL course does not include an initial SP IRST. The normal CPL/IR privileges will not apply until the necessary SP training has successfully been completed. That will also apply for FIC due lack of SP experience. |
Another variation of rules is that once a CPL/IR (+MCC on Integrated courses) is applied for/issued, the ATO responsibility ends. The fATPL holder (once MCC completed) completes the type rating. With MPL customers, the MPL licence is issued once the type rating (standard issue) is completed, and it is at this point the ATO responsibility ends. They have oversight of the type rating course. Incidentally the TRI/TRE need to be MPL qualified as well, irrespective that the type course is the same for all. Line training now takes place, and invariably the MPL FO will shine as the 120 hours of simulator prior to the type rating course has been using the specific SOPs of the company. The ideal course for those who wish to spent their career in the airlines. |
