Are you boys and ladies vaping while flying?

Simple question?

fox niner 17th May 2015 17:45

I have LPE level 6. But I don't know what vaping is.

Doug E Style 17th May 2015 17:49

No, I'm not. And I don't know anyone who does.

You need your head examined if you do it at any time.

In previous discussions it's been pointed out that the great majority of airlines prohibit it on their aircraft!

...and there are plenty of crusty Captains who will whip out the e-cig and start puffing and say "you don't mind, do you" mid puff.

My view is it's not worth a blazing argument at the start of a long day over but it does irritate me.

Basil 17th May 2015 18:42

Are you suggesting that, as an FO, you'd even consider starting an argument with the old man over something so trivial?

737aviator 17th May 2015 20:26

There are still second hand smoke implications in addition to most companies specifically banning passengers and crew from using them.

Nah, i would use my company ipad to take a picture, paste it into the report and enjoy another suddenly freed up space on the seniority list.

Basil 18th May 2015 13:52

denti,

enjoy another suddenly freed up space on the seniority list.
In the airlines I've flown for (and in RAF multis) you'd enjoy an extended period free of the encumbrance of having to handle the aircraft. What goes around comes around.

Sometimes a serious man to man chat is enough to resolve it.
Basil you chose your captain style airlines well i see, proof there is a fit for everyone out there:E
Hongkong based?:}

I don't smoke but as long as it's done with moderation, I don't really care too much. One colleague however, likes to smoke approx a pack per leg...

Sometimes not making waves is better.
Recollect an FO who used to upset everyone. A line captain told him publicly on a company bulletin board that, if he continued, he wouldn't get a command. The FO left shortly afterwards.

I'd a captain who used to light his last ciggie passing the OM.

Hongkong based?
Thankfully not. ;)

Basil, I understand your point and it actually doesn't bother me. However, vaping is technically not allowed (though nor is reading the paper on the iPad, but The Times in paper format is fine. Go figure!) just getting it out and starting puffing is not great CRM.

Thankfully unlike my time at sea nobody actually smokes on he flight deck (smoking was verboten then too but everyone ignored it.)

To be honest, half the problem is airlines banning things to show how "robust" their procedures are in introducing entirely unworkable procedures. One Loco bans all non-operational chat from start of push to ToC and ToD to the gate. Hardly a workable procedure - if you ask your colleague how they're feeling at Fl355 you are now in breach of company procedures!

Surely "How are you feeling?" is completely valid CRM. "Who are you feeling?" on the other hand...

Basil 19th May 2015 13:09

"Who are you feeling?"
To which the reply is: "He speaks very highly of you!" :E

Secondhand Smoke Goes Electronic With Damaging Free Radicals From E-Cig Vapor

Different time, different culture i guess. E-cig use on board of an airplane is forbidden by law over here, same as normal cigarettes. Someone in breach of either regulation will face immediate dismissal or downgrading.

I would actually enjoy being grounded for some time, as i still would get full pay (over 900 guaranteed hours a year), my full vacation on top of that and as many sick days as i want, if i take them during vacation i get my vacation days back too.

As for not handling during normal line operation, that would be another breach of regulation, although in this case only of the companies ops spec, which still is law within the company.
