FAA Parts Origin

Hi all, forgive me if this question has been asked before - did the usual searches.

Could anyone point me into the right direction as to where did the FAA parts system originate from? I notice it use in a number of other places in the world - including the OTAR's from Air Safety International - UK CAA international territories arm.

Leads me to ask, is this a system from ICAO or somewhere else or did the yanks come up with it and others are imitating.

ie - Part 61, licensing, part 91, 121, 135 etc all seem consistent.

Cheers!

Others are copying the FAR numbering, it seems.

The current organisation dates from 1965 when Title 14 of the CFRs was reorganized.

Some interesting background here.

Thanks, very interesting. Does anyone know which other organizations have adopted this format?

So far I have:
  • ASSI
  • Aus CASA
  • NZ CAA
  • South African CAA

Is it really just EASA that is holding out??
