Just out of interest, regarding the £12,000 Breitling Emergency Watch Beacon: had a passenger been wearing one and been able to activate the ELT, would it have assisted in the search of the missing 777 or is that a too simplistic question to ask?

You'll be much better off with a Sat phone.

The pertinent question is whether a passenger wearing one would have been aware the flight was going off-course and towards disaster, and whether they would have still been alert enough to activate it in time. I'd suggest they wouldn't.
