FMC and MCDU !!!
 

hello,

I'm an aircraft technician working for a major airline in South Asia.

I have a good knowledge about the systems and the cockpit but I found it difficult to learn the FMC. I always try to learn things through the MDCU interface but I have no idea how to use it other than taking a print of PFR.

I'd like to master the FMC. Can anybody suggest me a good learning material for that or any video, website please ?

Google Bill Bulfer FMC user guides. Ol' man Bulfer has retired but his guides are still worth it.

The bill Buffer guides are Boeing only. The OP also asks about the MCDU which is Airbus.

I have used four types of FMC in my career, and all are different. The problem with the guides are that they don't make much sense unless you have the box in front of you. Of course, the simulators have the boxes, but sim time is limited and expensive. Some airlines have computer FMC trainers and there's no harm in getting your company to request the use of those. Also, there are some discs around for use on a PC.

Well, the very Boeing focused 1999 edition of the "FMC USER'S GUIDE" by Bulfer et al says on page 8 : More interesting is, however, where one could find a PC trainer!? I have been looking for years but the rumors always turn out to be just... rumors.

Certain websites where you can find free movies also have FMC training software.

I once had a PC trainer for an MD-11. It was sort of fun, build flight plan, watch aircraft stages of flight, capture ILS arm autoland.

I'm attached to the line maintenance, so I got a a lot of free time to spend in the cockpit. Dealing with FMC is not a part of my job at the moment and thus I get a very rare opportunity to deal with it 'with an engineer or a senior tech' who can teach me.Everyone's busy !!! Line Maintenance !!!

But I sometimes spend hours in a cockpit doing checks and have all the time in the world to explore the FMC 'alone' . But I'm kinda scared to use it on my own because I have a feeling that I'm gonna screw up something. That's why I need some training material before playing with it alone

So long as you know how to "cycle the database" then you can play away till your heart desires and clear anything you like afterwards. When you want to clear your inputs go into DATA page 1 and then line select 4L which will take you to the status page. Flip the databases over by selecting the lower case "old" database as then active BUT please remember for the next crew to put it back as they might not catch it during their preflight.

I think you will have to manually delete any waypoints that you might create separately but that is on the same page at 5R.

FCOM pro-nor-srp p01-10 refers. It's under FMGS Initialisation.

This might be useful. It is for the B737 but the underlying Boeing FMC philosphy and layout is similar for later aircraft.
