ICAO Crew Card?

Is there any need for an ICAO crew card? Everywhere these days seems to require a passport, recently in London when I tried to use it she looked at me as if I was on crack and asked what it was. :D

An ICAO either shows one age, or is just great for nostalgia.

General Organization (GO) cards from high school are more recognized than ICAO cards.

I found it useful recently when they were happy to accept it at an Asian destination when I'd forgotten my passport (don't ask!)

If crew card is issued in accordance to certain ICAO standards - background check similar to airside pass, data format, machine readable area etc. and approved by state authority, it is indeed valid in lieu of the passport for the active crew. But I cannot imagine strolling around the world only with ID ..

ICAO annex 9, ICAO doc 9303 :8

Yep, we had to provide background check documentation and stuff when renewing our crew IDs this time. But our new IDs are not machine readable so not sure where we are standing.... ?

Airlines don't let you fly, as an aircrew without a company's ID, is this supported by an EASA specific regulation? or is just a company's requirement? I can't find any relevant regulation at EASAs.......
