I beleive it's when you have the qualifications but not the hours to back it up. I'm sure someone out there with more experience could elaborate on this a bit more.

Thanks kb1 for the reply.

kb1 is correct, a frozen ATPL is held by someone who has demonstrated his theoretical knowledge to an ATPL standard, but does not have sufficient hours to be awarded the full licence.

When sufficient hours have been gained (and I think it still has to be done in a 5 yr period) the full ATPL is then awarded without the need to sit anymore exams.

Just to put this one to bed,FZN ATPL is when u have ATPLtheory done, hold a PROFFESIONAL LICENSE,eg BCPL,CPL,not ppl,and need only hours up to 1500 for issue.

The guys/gals above are correct but i think there is a new requirement under JAR that you need multi-engine/turbo prop time to defrost your licence. Might not have the details exact but there is something more to it.
Anyone confirm/clarify http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/confused.gif

Full Requirements is to achieve 1500 hrs including:

.500 hrs on multi pilot aeroplanes
.250 hrs PIC of which up to 100 hrs may be PIC U/S
.200 hrs of cross country flight of which 100 hrs may be as P2 or PIC U/S
.75 hrs of instrument time
.Hold valid multi-pilot aeroplane type and instrument rating
.100 hrs night flight as PIC or P2
.Not more than 100 hrs may be in a flight simulator

Just happened to have the AIC (White 47/2000)in front of me - hope this clears it up.
