American pilots' accent?

I've been told that Chuck Yeager set a trend back in the 50-60's and all american pilots since then has developed a West Virginia accent.

Any truth to that?

Uhmm.... I do seem to recall a news paper article some months back on this (I think it was in 'USA Today' ) that had a whole page devoted to this. I'm sure that it was also mentioned on PPRuNe.

Thus, does anybody remember the article or PPRuNe thread ?

Yup. I remember that. Lasted for a few years, now only the new guys try it.

Gotta confess I tried it my self (after all, I did fly fighters), but sounded funny mixed with my Brooklyn accent. ;)

Read (or re-read) the Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe.

I believe he takes up that very topic about the southern drawl and comfort levels amongst the pax during an emergency.

Top book all round if you ask me.
