Where can i fly a WWII warbird?
Hello all,
Going to be in the US in various states over the next 6 months. Does anyone know where I can have a go at flying a warbird. I know there is a P-51 place in Florida - has anyone tried them? Anyway, any info would be appreciated! Cheers all |
If you are in California there is a guy down at Calrsbad (Palomar-McCellan Airfield) that does flight s in warbirds. If there are two of you he can even arrange a mock dogfight for you.
If memory serves me right though he is a bit pricey, he was still operating when I flew into there in Fenruary. Regards, Julian. ------------------ Live fast..dies young...leave a good looking corpse! |
Thanx for the info! What kind of aircraft do they operate and do you have any contact details for them?
Cheers! |
Were the warbirds at McLellan the Harvard and the Stearmans.
I saw them a couple of years ago. They looked great, the Harvard was $400/hour and the stearmans a bit less. Have they got some more now? f you want I have a contact a Palomar, I'll try to get their number for you. If you want to fly somthing Old and V.fast how about one of those Hawker Hunters in England. Rides can be arranged, see www.hawkerhunter.com. Good luck. |
I flew a Texan a few years ago in St Augustine, FL. It was a gift but I think it's not too expensive. Can't remember the name of the outfit but lots of fun, they let you fly it all exept for T.O. and ldg.

Mad-Dog11, the P-51 is in Kissimee FL. I don't remember the name of the firm. I'm not home right now, but will revert (if nobody else gets you the info)when back.
The bird is very nice, fully dual equipped (only one in the world) and of course very expensive. Again I don't have the rates handy, but I think to remember someth'around 800 box for 30 min and 1400 for 1 hour. Hope you can do it and please enjoy some for me :) P.S. There's also a T-6 Harvard or whatever you want to call it in Van Nuys CA, no details... ------------------ ... cut my wings and I'll die ... |

A harvard isnt really a war bird, is it? Its just what they did advanced training on? Still, seems quite good, theres even a place in England that has `em, about £400 an ahour though. Stearmans arent quite war birds are they? They are the american equivalent of Moths really, only a little faster and bigger.
Mclellan, isnt that where they trained for the Doolittle raids? That reminds me! Wouldnt it be great to have a ride in a WW2 bomber? I`ve never seen it advertised though, has anyone else? |
Stick a Harvard next to a Tomahawk and it's a warbird alright ;) The UK Harvard is probably based down South somewhere, because I've seen it at Goodwood a few times now. I was told £450/hr, but that's not official. Nice aeroplane. |
They're based at Shoreham Airport, check this out:
http://www.warbirdflying.com/ They have also have a Chipmunk available |
Cheers for the link. One day I am gonna fly that aeroplane :) As I arrived at Goodwood for my trial lesson, it did a flypast at FL bugger-all. Magic :) :) |
How about flying a Buccaneer,Hunter and Lightning then...

One thing at a time.... :) |
I'd love to have a ride in a P51- now that would be great! A P40/F4U corsair would be great fun too! Notsure if there are many F4 Corsairs flying around the world?
|
There are a number of Corsairs in UK and France, Duxford got 7 together for a display last year; but I don't think any are dual. Duxford also sometimes offers Harvard flights (not certain who operates it)
