ATSOCAS & Controlled airspace

Hi All,

I have a question regarding the new ATSOCAS and controlled airspace.

Prior to ATSOCAS - If I were to transit a class D zone, I would have previously contacted the zone controller and requested a zone transition and flight information/radar information service.

Now that ATSOCAS hads been implemented what do I know need to request as my understanding is that ATSOCAS relates to uncontrolled (F&G) classes only (and Class C for TRA/Military Training)

DO I........
(A) request Zone transit and a Basic/traffic service or
(B) zone transit only and assume I will be receiving some other service or
(C) zone transit and Flight Information/Radar Information?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Ok just a couple of things to clear up here. Class D airspace is CONTROLLED airspace. As such, when inside you will be provided with a radar control service. Under this type of service when flying VFR, you are responsible for terrain and your own separation against other traffic, however, there will more likely be specific routing instructions from the controller and altitude restrictions (not above/below etc) to "deconflict" from other traffic inside the zone.

Outside the zone you are most likely to be in class G airspace. (unless on an advisory route, class F, or coming from some other controlled airspace)

The new ATSOCAS now allows VFR & IFR traffic to request a Basic service, a Traffic service or a Deconfliction service. FIS, RIS & RAS no longer exist. Detailed explanation can be found in CAP774 (Civil Aviation Authority Home Page)

Depending on what type of service you would like, on your initial call i would request the service you require OUTSIDE the zone and then your zone transit. (you should be told your under a radar control service once inside). Basically just a service name change :oh:

Hope this helps
