Aerad Plate Naming Convention
Out of interest, does anyone know the significance of the suffix M on the end of an Aerad plate name (e.g. N2M)?
It is not always there - so I guess it must mean something when it is! Thanks to anyone who knows the answer. |
Means it's an MSA chart. All terrain will be in green and the alts shown are MSA. If the chart has no "M" and the terrain is shown in brown then they are spot altitudes. This is for AERAD/Thales BTW!

The 'other' kind of Aerad is suffixed "C" (e.g. N1C) and the C stands for Contour. Contours are shown in what I'd describe as red rather than brown, and are ground elevations.

On the whole, I find the above highly confusing. I wonder why AERAD don't use the same convention on ALL their charts, rather than having at least three different ones.
Surely a pilot under pressure diverting to an airfield he's never visited before could easily miss what type of convention his plates are using and get himself into a great deal of trouble by using (say) an incorrect descent profile. |
