JAR Logbook Confusion
 

I'm in the process of changing over from a paper CAA-type logbook to a JAR compliant software variety.

My CAA logbook had P1 (U/S) columns in which I logged PF co-pilot time and Co-Pilot columns in which I logged PNF time. I assumed this to be correct.

My new JAR layout logbook, however, appears to have done away with the P1 (U/S) columns.:ugh:

I'd be grateful if anyone can offer some advice as to which columns my co-pilot PF and PNF time should be logged in.

The way I log it is to put "my name/Captains name" under the "PIC" column and then log the time as command hours. Let the captain sign in the remarks column and also make a note that that this is P1/US hours in the remarks column to avoid any confusion

All hours as First officer should apparantly be logged as "co-pilot."
I asked a JAA TRE who isn't British.
You are NOT PIC when PF.

This is possibly not answering the question, but the CAA logbook (CAP 407) section (11) in the part 1 Instructions for use stated that P1 (U/S) co-pilot acting as pilot in command under the supervision of the pilot in command should record in the column headed Pilot in command (p1) under the column headed commander you enter the name of the flights commander the actual P1

Is this not possible with your new logbook ?

despegue - I already gave you the answer to this, and I took the correct method from my JAR compliant logbook.

If your TRE was correct, how could you ever achieve your ATPL unless you flew single crew? Think about it!

Logging time as PIC
 

For JAA, you can log time as PIC as long as you fly with a TRI and your aviation authority has approved that TRI. For CAA if the aircraft (G) and the TRI are CAA I believe you do not need the authorization but is saffer to confirm. For JAA you mark PIC U/S (PICUS). JAA does not recognize P1.:ok:

JAA book's manual gives answer to it allowing FO hours while performing PIC duties UNDER APPROVED COMMANDER supervision to be logged as P1(U/S) .

JA1seems not quite correct to me as PF co-pilot time doesn't ALWAYS equal PIC Under Supervision. not every captain is authorised to be your supervisor. TRIs and company/authority designated fellows may act as such.

All my F/O time I log as co-pilot.
If I fly with a training captain I can ask to be supervised as PIC.
I still log this under co-pilot but write PICUS under remarks and get the captain to sign the log.

it is not my personal invention and I used to record this some time ago the same way ( unfortunately ) you are saying you do.

nowadays, according to JAR-FCL 1.080 Jeppesen Pilot Logbook's chapter : "Instruction for use" - notes for column 10 (Pilot function time) say :
- enter flight time as pilot-in - command (PIC), student pilot-in-command(SPIC) and pilot - in- command under supervision (PICUS) as PIC

- all time recorded as SPIC or PICUS must be countersigned by the aircraft commander/flight instructor in the Remarks (column 12)

Why not log it this way since you are authorised to do so?

Use of Column 5 in the new JAR-FCL Logbooks

This might sound a stupid question but I am a bit confused over the use of Column 5, and after asking some of my colleagues they are equally unsure. My question is this:

If I fly a type which is capable of being flown solo but I am either instructing on it or being instructed, I presume the "Multi Pilot" time column is ticked. If I fly it solo then I tick the "Single Pilot SE/ME" box depending on whether it is a single engine type or a multi-engine type. Am I correct here?

I ask as I have also been told that if I fly a type that is able to be flown single pilot, I still tick the "Single Pilot SE/ME" box. The Instructions for use certainly in Pooley's JAR-FCL logbook are not clear, especially when instructing is involved.

I think I will stick to the old style Pooleys logbook as it is still available on their website as I understand that one a lot better!
