Landing speed Dash 8
 
Just out of interest what is the approx landing speed of a Dash 8 and is there much difference between the 300 and 400

The reason I ask as I was just watching the Flybe Dash 8 400 land at Manchester and it looked almost to be standing still at one point and was taking quite a battering

Its very difficult to accurately gauge the speed of an aircraft landing from a viewers perspective.
Remember as well, the speed you see it doing is the groundspeed which will be influenced by the wind. So a strong headwind will make it look slow, even if it had a high IAS.

I once took a Dash8 300 to 129KIAS on landing on the way in to Blackpool Airport. The rollercoaster they got there was a smoother ride than that was...

And no, there isn't much difference between the 300 and 400, it still feels like you're landing on an ocean.

I dont fly the 300 but I believe it has a fairly standard Vref of 120kts. The 400 Vref Is variable depending on the weight and flap setting but it can be in the range of 108kts up to around 130kts. If the flaps dont come down Vrefs around 150kts can be expected and in iceing conditions this can go up to aroud 170kts although abviously this is not a regular occurance thank god.:O

RaTa: Only on a bad day to I land in the Ocean on a DeHavilland...when I'm flying the TT.

Flying into water is difficult in any aircraft, although it must have been difficult for the poor sods who landed in the sea, whilst flying a B777, (Correct if wrong) after it ran out of fuel when terrorists said they weren't bothered, that there wasn't enough fuel to fly them to their desired destination.

It's days like that you wish people could just stick to steeling cars, and that large aircraft were designed to make landing in the water easier and safer in the event of an emergency.

That sure would be useful when you find some the undercarrage no longer works.

Flap 15 vref: 12t-90kts through to 16.5t-105kts (add 10kts for ice protection on)
Flap 35 vref: 12t-83kts through to 16.5t-95kts

Dash 8 300
Flap 15 vref: 14t-93kts through to 19.5t-111kts (+10 for ice prot.)
Flap 35 vref: 14t-87kts through to 19.5t-102kts

Dash 8 400
?(someone else might know)

That ditching you have seen was a 76. I do believe the terrorists tried to 'force it down' at the last moments so it wasn't a true ditching attempt with the FD in control.


I cant imagine coming in in a Dash8 at 170kts. :yuk:
